San Benedetto in Perillis is situated in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy. The town is situated 43 kilometers away from the capital of the province, known as L`Aquila.

San Benedetto in Perillis has a surface area of 19.1 square kilometers. It rises 878 meters above sea level. The territory of the municipality lies between 450 and 1.237 meters above sea level. The altimetric spread is thus of 787 meters.

In the high Middle Ages, there arose in the locality of "Perello" a monastery which served the peasantry of L'Aquila. Carl V later granted the lands around the town to one of the captains of his army. Eventually, the Caracciolo family took control of the area, and then in the 1700's, the Celestini Fathers of L'Aquila; until 1947, San Benedetto belonged to the Collepietro political faction.

The municipality of San Benedetto in Perillis had a population of 175 inhabitants according to the 1991 national census. In the 2001 national census, the population had dropped 17.14% to 145 inhabitants. The population density is 7.59 inhabitants per square kilometer.
[edit] Travel Information
The town is a two hour car ride from downtown Rome. The town can also be reached by taking a flight to Ancona, a city that is north of San Benedetto; or to Pescara, which is to the south of San Benedetto. From either Ancona or Pescara, it is a short train ride to San Benedetto.
Do not confuse the smaller San Benedetto (in the Abruzzi region) with the larger coastal city of S.Benedetto del Tronto, in the Marche region (just north of the border with Abruzzi).
There are many towns in Italy called San Benedetto, usually with some sort of geographic description after the Saint's name.
