[edit] History

The airport, originally named Carr Field, was built in 1941. During World War II it became an important training center for United States Army Air Forces. The airport was renamed in honor of local Jack W. Mathis, a bombardier who received the Medal of Honor.

After the war, the airport was turned over to the city of San Angelo.
