This may sound odd, but I do not delete personal attacks on my user page, and I respectfully request that others do the same, if they felt otherwise moved. I may well indefinitely block anyone who places a "smile" (or anything similarly inane) on this page.

I take it you do not wish me to contribute at all. Very sad. David | Talk 21:53, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

You can edit without those buttons. No, honestly, you can. Sam Korn (smoddy) 21:55, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
You do not understand. The article ban is a vote of no confidence, implicitly, in all of my contributions. I cannot contribute until it is repudiated. I really do not care about any of the others. David | Talk 21:57, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
If you insist on reading it like that, I can't stop you. Sam Korn (smoddy) 21:58, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Well, that's a slightly odd response. If I could construe the article ban in some other way, I would, but I am forced to that conclusion. No-one has really justified the article ban and I can see no reason for it. I came to agreement with Irishpunktom more than a month ago which has prevented and will prevent any disruption. I have offered negotiation without preconditions on any alternative method which might get the article ban removed. No-one has been interested, which is an appalling situation (whatever is going on here, it is not arbitration). I really do not see why the arbitrators have been so worked up about admin status which is an utter irrelevancy except if the article ban is withdrawn. David | Talk 22:16, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Then you misunderstand the purpose of the sanction. It is not to punish for these infractions. The point is that the Committee does not have confidence in you as an administrator. Sam Korn (smoddy) 23:20, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
I just told you it had nothing to do with admin status, which I've just resigned anyway. You'd better do better than this in your Cambridge interview. They don't allow thick people in. David | Talk 13:33, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
This kind of comment does nothing for you. The Committee does not believe you can usefully edit this article. It is fortunate for me that I am not "thick". Sam Korn (smoddy) 14:19, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your reject vote in my RfA

Hi, I was wondering if you could give me a reason for your reject vote in my RfA against Jgp? [1] Dionyseus 10:11, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

You had no coherent case, nothing but a set of accusations of (minor) misdoings. You have not gone through anything resembling the dispute resolution process. You have no case. Sam Korn (smoddy) 10:29, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Minor misdoings? User:Danielpi is apparently going to be banned for calling me an idiot and a child several times. [2][3] While I agree that Danielpi should be banned for his personal attacks, I am much more offended by Jgp's repeated personal attacks against me. As for dispute resolution process, just look at Jgp's atttitude, mediation would be completely useless in this case. I had reported Jgp to WP:PAIN, unfortunately the administrator who took the case did not recognize the personal attacks and basically gave Jgp a slap in the hand for calling me a liar. [4] [5] Dionyseus 10:42, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Telling me the same thing again will not change my mind. I can read. Go away. Sam Korn (smoddy) 11:18, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Hunger/Proposed decision

If you're moving to close this one, you'd probably better make sure that everybody agrees that stuff has passed. Currently the note on the proposed decision says "On this case, no Arbitrators are recused and 2 are inactive, so 7 votes are a majority." --Tony Sidaway 15:09, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your edit to User talk:Jwfacts

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also click on the signature button Image:Wikisigbutton.png located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! (Just a friendly reminder.) - CobaltBlueTony 13:17, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

This is an interesting reflection on the current state of Wikipedia. Sam Korn (smoddy) 16:34, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
In what context? - CobaltBlueTony 16:46, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
That I have 10000 edits, have been here very nearly two years, am an administrator and a member of the Arbitration Committee, have CheckUser and Oversight priviledges, am listed as a press contact and have permissions for the OTRS customer relations software and yet I still get given a boilerplate message when I forget to sign a post on a talk page. Don't worry, I know the current culture of Wikipedia is to Always Use The Designated Templates, regardless of context.  :-) Sam Korn (smoddy) 17:16, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, I figure everyone deserves a friendly reminder, and I actually have little time to wiki. - CobaltBlueTony 18:11, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
P.S. How does one find their edit count? - CobaltBlueTony
It's not a problem, it's just a general gripe I have with the current climate of Wikipedia. Edit counts can be easily found by using Essjay's tool (which may not be working) or one of the other tools at WP:KT#See also. Beware, editcountitis (paying too much attention to edit counts) can be fatal, but sometimes they are definitely useful. For me, with edits that look like vandalism, whether to use a boilerplate message or a custom "what the hell are you doing" one depends greatly on the user's edit count. HTH. Sam Korn (smoddy) 18:42, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Sam Korn, the fact that you only have 10000 edits over two years is very troubling. You need to report to Templates for Every Occasion patrol. Also remember not to remove the template. Removal of templates (at least warning templates) may become warn-able and block-able behavior. See [6]. Your comment to CobaltBlueTony reminded me of the the section of this proposed policy where use of templates on experienced users is discussed. I think that giving templates (especially warnings) to experienced users makes no sense and often aggravates the situation. IMO, friendly suggestions made to prevent or calm down a dispute are much more effective with experienced users.
While here I'll ask your opinion on something else. Knowing that Tony was on a break I started leaving reminder messages for arbitrators about skipped votes on cases near closing. Noting this, Tony asked me to help with clerking tasks. Since I regularly read cases anyway, I would be glad to help. My only reluctance stems from a concern that some party will challenge the validity of a case I opened or closed. Should we limit this stuff to official clerks to stop the possible protests? What do think? FloNight talk 19:37, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the first paragraph. I needed a laugh tonight.  :-)
Re the second paragraph, would you like to be an official ArbCom clerk? I'll put your name forward, and if there aren't any objections in the next day or so you'll be on the list and completely official. Let me know if you don't want the nomination. Cheers, Sam Korn (smoddy) 22:06, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Sure, make it official. Rather do it that way. CobaltBlueTony, I do not think you did anything wrong by leaving Sam the reminder template. I assumed that you were being helpful. And being helpful is good. :-) FloNight talk 01:24, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
I am confused by the line, "Tony asked me to help with clerking tasks." It took me a moment to realize that you were offering FloNight ArbCom clerkship and not me. - CobaltBlueTony 01:10, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Tony, I'm sorry if I sounded a touch snappy. Meatspace problems made it a bad moment for me to get that message. Sorry! Sam Korn (smoddy) 07:56, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Request for arbitration and help

(a) I have been accused of "sockpuppetry". This is totally unjust. I am not the same as any ot the Wikipedia-editors to whom I have been linked. I seek an arbiter who will listen to reason and logic. Contributors named Bioinformaticist, M&M Peace (i think), Philly Student...they are not I, at all --I do not know who they are, I vow as if in court! (b) Why are articles (bios of living people) on Marion Cohen, Roberta Wenocur, Elaine Zanutto, Linda Zhao, and other female mathematicians being held to standards different from male mathematicians like Herbert Wilf, Dennis DeTurck, &c .? (c) What is the problem with the corp, Daniel H. Wagner Associates? (d) All right, maybe articles need improvement, but deletion? and some with prompt deletion? (e) Wikipedia should be fun, not so contentious.

Please help. I want to be nice, but it is difficult when being unjustly accused and bulliied.

I hope you are understanding, and believe me. I am not lying. This is the truth.

His Excellency... has continued his racist attacks, now he has forced Pecher a longtime editor to leave completely, are you going to do something or should i start using the same tactics to force His Excellency... and like off wikipedia. The arbitration case should close in a few days time. If the current motions pass, he will be banned for four months. This could be extended to six depending on another motion. [edit] Spamming Sam and Morven

Hi, Sam. I think the arbcom may be de facto encouraging the user's delusions of grandeur by not finishing voting on this motion in a prior case a bit sharpish. It really needs to take effect. I believe the user will ignore all arbitrator admonishments until there's an actual decision. (And beyond, but then at least she can be blocked for it.) Do you feel like taking a look at it? I honestly don't think you'd find it a time-consuming kind of thing to make up your mind about. Say 30-40 seconds from start to finish. Best wishes, Bishonen | talk 00:13, 14 September 2006 (UTC).

[edit] September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!

[edit] Recusal is sought

Hi. In light of your expression of support in a certain infamous RfA, I submit you should recuse from RfArs to which it is closely tied. Regards, El_C 13:54, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi El C. I understand why you make this request. I did consider whether my support for Carnildo's re-adminship merits my recusal. I can certainly see that a recusal here could improve the Committee's appearance. However, this is not my aim. My aim is to ensure that the Committee's judgment is as sound and as fair as it can possibly be. I believe I can judge the case fairly: I am not closely involved in the case and my feelings are not particularly strong in the matter concerned. Nevertheless, I do respect your request, but I am afraid that I shall not fulfill it. Thank you very much, Sam Korn (smoddy) 14:01, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
Hello again. In this expression of support, you wrote "what is past is past." The RfAr largely revolve around (as the impetus, even) parties who strongly do not believe that, in this particular case, "what is past is past." Thus, the appearence is that you already have a well-defined opinion on these decisive grievences. Please reconsider your position. Regards, El_C 14:10, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
You're going to have to run that by me again. I don't really understand what you mean. Could you be more specific/less elliptical? Thanks, Sam Korn (smoddy) 14:15, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
No problem. 1. There was RfA that is key to this case. 2. It involved grievences that you dismissed ("what is past is past"). 3. Now you are arbitrating a case that based on these grievences, involving parties who expressed an opposite opinion. Regards, El_C 14:31, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
I have to say, I disagree that the RfA was key to this case. The case, as is mentioned in the summary, is about Giano's actions and the other actions that were a result of that. The RfA is the backdrop, certainly, but it is not the focus and I don't think it colours my vision particularly. I very much hope that I did not dismiss anyone's grievences. It certainly was not my intention to, and I apologise if my statement sounded like I was. I understand (and to some extent) agree with the grievences expressed, but I simply disagreed on how they should affect things now. Binary "votes" have a habit of making similar views appear diametrically opposed when in fact they are not. I think that I can arbitrate this case fairly. Thank you for explaining to me the reasons for your request. Sam Korn (smoddy) 14:37, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
While I appreciate your interpretation, I disagree with it, and I feel that your appearence of integrity & impartiality here has been compromised. Regretfuly, I cannot view your involvement as legitimate and will advise others accordingly. El_C 14:44, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] NPA article

Hello.

Myself and User:Cswrye are currently discussing rating an article within Wikiproject: Psychology - specifically NPA personality theory. Would it be possible for you to provide additional insight, as and when it is convenient? Thank you! :)-- D-Katana 13:58, 04 October 2006

I am afraid I know nothing about this subject. However, just looking at the first few sentences, there's a major problem -- it doesn't tell me what the subject is. It is slightly formulaic, but it's always best to start by saying explicitly what an article is about, e.g. The NPA theory of personality is a psychological theory that states that... Then, once you have established the topic, it is then possible to usefully mention its creator. In addition, you probably need to change the heading What is personality? to Definition of personality and begin it as "Personality" is defined as a collection of emotional, thought and behavioral patterns unique to a person that is consistent over time. If I can, I'll have another look in a day or so. Sam Korn (smoddy) 08:41, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
The last AC meeting (full log)
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

[edit] Doing something about the ridiculous date autoformatting/linking mess

Dear Sam—you may be interested in putting your name to, or at least commenting on this new push to get the developers to create a parallel syntax that separates autoformatting and linking functions. IMV, it would go a long way towards fixing the untidy blueing of trivial chronological items, and would probably calm the nastiness between the anti- and pro-linking factions in the project. The proposal is to retain the existing function, to reduce the risk of objection from pro-linkers. Tony 14:57, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
