Alright mate, I just posted the page on Charlie Tully after being given that poem by its author with permission to post it on wikipedia is there any way we can put the poem back up if I were to prove this to wikipedia?

PS the entry isn't finished I am currently double checking his bio before I post it.

Thank you Kevin McNamee

[edit] Treasury of Athens

I regret you cannot see that the left side of the building is =minimally= a degree out of skew. I have no idea what lens you were using when you shot this, but my guess is at least 35mm, possibly 28mm, and the result is that there is considerable distortion. You need to use Photoshop's 'perspective' function to bring the left side into true. Denni 19:30, 2005 Mar 12 (UTC)

  • Hi. I've made some initial adjustments to the image skew, which I have posted to the FP page. As I have indicated, I see this as a first approximation; the top and bottom perspective lines are still not true, but this fixes the major issue on the left. I hope you will agree that this is an improvement over the initial image. Denni 19:52, 2005 Mar 12 (UTC)
    • The pixellation is due to the image just being a screen shot on my end. I don't have access to a larger resolution image, so have to work with what I see on my screen. I agree that a slight crop to the bottom would inmprove the proportions of the picture. I should also say that the colors are very rich, and if only for that, I would like to see this make FP status. Denni 20:01, 2005 Mar 12 (UTC)
      • The larger the image size, the happier every one is around here :) I will work on the geometry just a bit more, and post what I can do for your approval. Denni 20:14, 2005 Mar 12 (UTC)

[edit] Republics

Need your help and/or advice. The British Wikipedian Republican Party sought fit to delete Wikinfo:Classical definition of republic from Wikipedia. There is a terrible brouhaha at Talk:Republic. They won't even allow an external link! SimonP really doesn't know what he is doing. They deleted the Classical definition of republic and created mixed government and politeia instead. The official title of mixed government is a Republic and the Romans translated "politiea" as Republic. And then to top it off the new article Classical republicanism doesn't refer to the Classical republics of Crete, Sparta, Solonic Athens, or Rome but to Machiavelli's ideology. How can that be when Venice in the 13th century instituted a mixed government and called herself a "Republic".

With Jwrosenwieg and Kim Bruning there was a tacit agreement a year ago to have republic be the modern meaning and a [Classical definition of republic] to describe the ancient republics of Hellas and Rome and their influence. To say the least the "Republic section" is all messed up. We need some clarification. I have new information but User:Snowspinner won't let me bring this back up for undelete. (I do grant that a little bit of the Classical definition is original but the rest is not.) I will not let Sparta be called anything but a republic! I will not let the British wikipedian modern republicans strip Sparta, (my heritage and roots) of her rightful name. She is a Classical republic and needs to be called such! At the least, where is the damage in having an external link?WHEELER 15:38, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Meta-templates

Regarding Wikipedia:Meta-templates considered harmful. Could I ask you, if there was a specific instruction only to use meta-templates with subst:, whether you would still object? Cheer, Smoddy (tgeck) 17:32, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

To be honest, I'd rather see a page where the basic template format can be copy-n-pasted from. Meta-templates for using subst: should be for only those most frequently used as a shortcut to paste text (Template:Welcome, for example). They shouldn't be used for creating other templates, since that action should be fairly uncommon. -- Netoholic @ 02:18, 2005 Mar 27 (UTC)

[edit] User:Irate

Irate seems to have no intention to respond to the RFC. Unfortunately, I'm going away for two weeks, so can't take this any further. I think he needs to be banned, and I think, if he won't promise to reform, the ArbCom ought to be involved. Could I leave this in your capable hands? Cheers, Smoddy (tgeck) 11:37, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Yes, I think that, if Irate does not respond to the RFC (now certified by 10 people), then it might well be appropriate to take this to the ArbCom. I'm not sure about banning, but I certainly think it's necessary that he commits to avoiding personal attacks in future. It would also be nice (but optimistic) if he apologised to those concerned. — Matt Crypto 16:36, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)
OK, perhaps that is over-egging the pudding slightly. However, with my being away from Wikipedia (sniff sniff), it would be great if you could handle matters. Of course, I doubt the problem will go away over two weeks, and I may be able to check in from time to time. Good luck Smoddy (tgeck) 17:11, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Yes -- to keep you updated, after his week-long silence, Irate erupted again and spent a few of hours yesterday (3rd April) behaving generally badly on the Wiki, IRC and mailing lists (personal attacks, listing user pages for deletion). He was eventually blocked for 24hrs for violating the 3RR. The ArbCom seem quite happy to accept this case, however. — Matt Crypto 20:21, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Images and media for deletion votes

  • I am contacting people who previously helped to vote to delete a generally objectionable photograph by a vote of 88 to 21, and who might be unaware that immediately after that image was voted to be deleted someone posted another which was very similar in content. My objections to this, and the previous image that was voted to be deleted might be based upon reasons far different from any that you have, but I do object to it, and consider the posting of such images to be acts of asinine stupidity, which burdens the project and its major educational aims in ways that they should not be burdened, and can be extremely detrimental to the acceptance and growth of WIkipedia's use and influence. Thus far those who I believe to be in the extreme minority of Wikipedians who would like to include these images, many who have been channeled to the voting page from the article with which it is associated have dominated the voting, 23 to 12 (as of the time that I composed this message). I would like to be somewhat instrumental in shedding a bit more light upon the issue, and if possible, helping to turn the tide against its inclusion. It might also be necessary to begin making an effort to establish an explicit Wikipedia policy against explicite photographic depictions of humans engaged in erotic, auto-erotic, or quasi-erotic activities. To my limited knowledge such images have not been accepted as appropriate anywhere else within this project, and frankly I can agree with those who are casually labeled prudes for opposing their inclusion, that they should not be. Vitally important information that might be unwelcome by some is one thing that should never be deleted, but un-needed images that can eventually prevent or impede many thousands or millions of people from gaining access to the great mass of truly important information that Wikipedia provides is quite another matter. There are vitally important distinctions to be made. Whatever your reasons, or final decisions upon the matter, I am appealing for more input on the voting that is occurring at Wikipedia:Images_and_media_for_deletion. ~ Achilles 01:33, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hello

Hi Smoddy, are you really only 16? Are you a sysop? How did you manage to edit over 1500 articles if you're so young? Boy, (1) your IQ must be well over 200 and (2) you must have a lot of time to have been able to (3) do so much on Wpdia. How in the world do you manage? Do you still have a life? No offense meant. JMBell 18:54, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)

And hello to you too, JMBell. Shall I take your questions one by one? 1) I am indeed 16. 2) No, I'm not yet a sysop, but if you want to nominate me ;) 3) Um, one at a time, I guess. Actually, no, I use Mozilla Firefox's tabbed browsing. That's the key. 4) If you say so. I didn't think so myself, but you clearly have all the answers. 5) Yep, I have a lot of time. It's called revising for exams ;). 6) You assume I do manage. How do you know I'm not totally insane, addicted to Wikipedia, do nothing else, survive on Doritos and Easter eggs, and go around with a chainsaw when taking a WikiBreak? 6) The fact that I am answering these questions would imply, on a biological level, that I have a life. On a social level, you'd better ask my girlfriend. That I don't have one is beside the point. No offence taken, and welcome to Wikipedia... Smoddy (tgeck) 19:51, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Well, Smoddy, I believe you, as the speed of your reply supports your claim. I suppose you froze your Easter eggs into a near-absolute-zero hibernating state, as you are still able to eat them by now. Or you boiled them to a superhigh temperature to rid them of the bacteria. Or they are unusually resistant to all kinds of bacteria. You should take care that you do not eat Clostridium botulinum along with them, or Wikipedia will lose a great contributor. The fact that you are answering me quite normally implies that you are not insane, as does your posts on such places as the Help Desk. Your social life would be tremendously interesting to analyze, like my brother's. He spends entire days in front of his computer. Do you come from Germany, by the way? Your surname sounds distinctly German. I would suppose that every little thing you pick up at school, you post on Wikipedia (or it could always be vice versa :)). I find Firefox's tabbed browsing a bother, but as they say, to each his own. I must say, if you're addicted to Wikipedia, it would be a great gift to humanity. Imagine, a man (rather boy) like you pulling out all the weeds in the garden. How responsible. Do you specialize in pulling out the typos, opinions, vandals, or others? Surviving on Doritos is a marvelously unique way to sustain yourself. Not even the strongest man on Earth could do that. I say, the wonders of youth are amazing. Which university did you say you want to go to? And what will you take up? Just a bit curious, if you mind answering, don't bother answering then. No offence meant. Thanks for the welcome. JMBell 20:23, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Smoddy's Easter egg preservation method: go on holiday for a fortnight. They'll still be there when you get back! I shall do my very best to be immune to Clostridium, if you say so. Not being a microbiologist, I haven't the first clue what I just said :). Your judgement of my sanity very happily reflects my own, so thanks! And I am very happy that my Help Desk contribution is appreciated. As for my social life, I can only say: thank goodness for MSN Messenger. I don't come from Germany, no, though my name does, as you point out. Your vice versa is quite right, by the way. Wikipedia is a far better learning source. Well, I regularly edit with 10 windows open at a time, on various policy and guideline pages, so my editing does tend to be a little slow, but Firefox speeds it up. Maybe you should look at Wikipedia:Wikipediholic, which is very instructive on my disorder. I guess the next step on that analogy would be to give me admin status and let me catch and kill (overreaction? maybe) those little pests, the aphids if you will, that come and ruin the beautiful garden of Wikipedia. Opinions and vandals are the most fun, I find, but correcting grocers' apostrophes are also fun (see User:Smoddy#Tasks for my somewhat sad targets). OK, OK, I eat Indian curries as well. Occasionally. ;) Well, Oxford by preference, Exeter or Edinburgh next. Arabic would be my ideal (I've been holidaying in Sinai in Egypt) Well, curiosity never hurt anyone (other than the cat), and I don't mind answering at all. Anyway, cheers. Back to not-real life. Smoddy (tgeck) 21:21, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Your preservation method must be very effective. I leave my Easter eggs for a week, and when I get back, boy, you should see them (or smell them ;)). Even when cryogenically frozen, they still rot. Weird. Now Clostridium botulinum is a highly dangerous bacterium which produces a toxin so fatal, that one dies within 24 hours of ingesting it. It paralyzes the muscles, esp. of the lungs and heart. That's where they get Botox from. The substance of your lessons must be somewhat questionable if you find Wikipedia a better learning tool. Good luck on your entrance exams into Oxford (if you have to take any, I'm unfamiliar with the school system in G.B.). As an aside, what word do over half of Oxford graduates spell wrongly? Give up? The answer is "wrongly", of course. I know, it's a somewhat lame joke, but it's the only one I have in context. :) I've always wanted to go to Egypt. Love the pyramids and the ancient culture. Are there many terrorists there? I read an article that said they disembowel tourists (esp. in Luxor). Well, I guess that's it for now. Back to my analyzation of Wikipedia. If I have any questions that aren't covered by the FAQs, can I ask you for help? Sorry to bother you (if you're bothered) again. :) See you around, Smoddy. JMBell 14:01, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Clearly so. I'll do my best to avoid the clostridium, sounds nasty! On the other hand, it could be a reflection of Wikipedia's excellence! Nah, no entrance exams: it all depends on school grades. I'll probably take a year out to give me my best chance of getting in. The only entrance exams we have are for law and medicine. I'm guessing that joke works as well for Harvard, Yale, Princeton, or Seoul... I'm afraid I've been in the Sinai, in Dahab. I've been diving.  :))) I didn't see any disemboweling, no... Sure, ask away. I've been here quite a while now, so I know my way around. Ask whatever you like. Just one suggestion at the moment: when you're on a talk page, you can precede each paragraph with a number of colons. This indents the text, so giving the conversation some structure, as you can see from how I've organised this one. Tara for now (how British!), Smoddy (tgeck) 15:06, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Thanks, Smoddy! At the moment I'm analyzing Wikipedia and might not have questions for some time. One thing's bothering me though: that article I was talking about on the help desk (Across the River and Into the Trees) which was an abridged version of an external source. It was originally placed by an anon (IP 68.something, I forgot) and was subsequently edited by several users, who did not alter its form. It's mostly the same as the orig, but with a few words changed or moved around or whatnot. It looks like plagiarism to me, but I'm not sure. I edited it a bit, but it seems as if I added more "plagiarized" material (horror of horrors). What would be the custom when encountering this sort of thing? And what would be the custom in friendly discussions (like this one), reply on the sender's page or the recipient's? I mean, our discussions can't always be quantum-entangled. :) See you around! [edit] Advance congratulations

Since you now have 32 users supporting your RfA, I guess it would be safe to assume that you will very soon be an administrator (unless 64 people suddenly decide to side against you, which is, of course, extremely unlikely). I am somewhat superstitious, though, and so I will not yet congratulate you on your election (although the subject of this message says so), lest these 64 jolly people come along and ruin your day. Instead, I will wish you a simple "All the Best!" and "Keep Up the Good Work". Be good, Smoddy. Don't fail us Wikipedians. And don't fail your exams. :) Best of luck and cheers - JMBell° 21:12, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Congratulations, Smoddy!

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 20:42, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • Well, your name was listed on the history of article edit on Alexa Davis, and no other was on it, so I assumed that you created that page, sorry for the misjudgement. Also, I found the Alexa Davis article when I was zooming through the VfD category for vote casting. Also, Whoever created the Alexa Davis article must of really had a crush on her and thought she was Wikipedically notable; Also, that person must of really liked her, and the entry "Alexa Davis is a lovely blonde girl who lives in the greater Northern New Jersey area. She's shockingly beautiful and tends to strike dumb all who see her. Her boyfriend, Danny Kelly, adores her, even when she's mean to him." may indicate that Alexa's boyfriend made the article. If you know if Danny Kelly has a Wikipedia user name, give it to me so I can contact him for vanity advice. --SuperDude 18:42, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion process

When deleting vfd'd pages, please be sure to check "What links here" and zap any redirects (and, usually, remove any normal links to the article, too). I bring this up because of Heritage valley, which I've just marked for speedy -- it redirects to Heritage Valley, whose vfd you closed. See Wikipedia:Deletion process for the the full step-by-step guide. —Korath (Talk) 06:10, Apr 26, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for that. I must have missed it (I was looking at most of the pages I was deleting and their links...). We live and learn! Smoddy (Rabbit and pork) 14:00, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)`

Hi there! Because the RFC about Xiong seemed to deal mainly on his disagreements with Netoholic, I thought it best to start a new RFC to see if people have comments on Xiong's behavior that do not relate to Netoholic. Please give your thoughts and/or opinion on that at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Xiong. Radiant_* 08:26, Apr 27, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Congrats and translation

Hi Smoddy, thought I'd send this now, since I've kept you waiting for some time. Congratulations on your election! Enjoy your new powers, but abuse them. You could get banned if you don't. Hehe. Anyway, how do you like being a sysop? I've noticed that you're mostly in and out of the deletion log these past two days. Be sure not to delete my stuff by accident. :) Here's your sample text, translated into plain, simple English, without any elaborate embellishments or whatnot:

I'll take a walk to the pub to have a curray and a big beer with the kids and the wife. I'll pay with a check, then toddle off down the road, say hallo to the corner (or?). Back at the house, I'll climb the stairs for a good night's sleep.

[edit] Kate's tool

Hi! I found your name when I've been searching the village pump to find some info about Kate's tool. I understand from your comment that you're not MediaWiki expert but I really don't know where to ask. I work on Serbian Wikipedia, and as you might know we Serbs are using Cyrillic alphabet (something like this - здраво ;) Now, problem is that Kate’s tool doesn’t support Cyrillic alphabet. I’m sure that this could be easily solved, but I don’t know on which door to knock. Do you know who is behind Kate’s tool (or do you know who knows...) Thanks! -- Obradović Goran (talk 22:46, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Cricket (portal)

Good work on this. The portal idea is a great one. — Knowledge Seeker 07:07, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Just to say I think you've put through some great improvements on the portal. Well done! jguk 13:22, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

There was a lot of disquiet over having it at Cricket (portal) so I've moved the page to Portal:Cricket (which isn't technically a newspace, but looks like one). I've asked for the redirect to be speedied. I'm hoping this will appease those who wanted it clearly distinguished from the article space. (Of course, we have loads of non-articles in the articles space, such as disambiguation pages, but some are being especially difficult with this one.) Kind regards, and many thanks again on your improvements to the page so far, jguk 17:37, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

I have seen WP:RFAR. Ben's overreacting (he does sometimes, but it's gone a bit far today). I can't see anything happening to SPUI (though I'm sure the arbs will dispense of it in a way that doesn't imply any criticism of Ben), jguk 17:48, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

Hi. Sorry to bother you again. I've opened a new vote on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Portal:Cricket. I wonder whether you'd go there to support keeping it. Kind regards, jguk 19:02, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] RE:WikiPortal

My answer depends on what you're referring to. Are you referring to my removing it from Wikipedia:Wikiportals or my vote for moving it from article namespace? If the former is your concern, at the time it was posted by jguk it was not a portal in any form - closer to a disambiguation page - and consequently, did not warrant listing. Its namespace was a further disqualification. If you are enquiring about my vote on its VfD, I don't feel I have to explain my vote at all. I will, however, say that I don't wish it deleted, but simply moved to the correct namespace (where all other Wikiportals exist).--Cyberjunkie 04:27, 2 May 2005 (UTC)

I don't think it would be appropriate to list it whilst the conflict continues. I have not voted on the new VfD because I have not yet come to a personal conclusion. Whatever the resolution is, it is likely to effect all Wikiportals - ergo, the list is essentially a lame-duck.--Cyberjunkie 14:04, 2 May 2005 (UTC)
Although I stated that had not come to no conclusion, you've succeeded in eliciting my position. My position is: If the portal were at Wikipedia:Wikiportal/Cricket, I would include it, simply because that is where all others reside. To not include it would be exclusionist. However, I maintain no objection to a new Wikiportal namespace being created for all Wikiportals.
The issue of the Cricket Wikiportal's format is secondary at best. The broader debate (the beginnings of which can be found here) on the purpose of a Wikiportal will determine how Wikiportals are formatted.--Cyberjunkie 14:36, 2 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion

Hi Smoddy, can you do something for me? I moved English Garden to English Garden (Munich) (it's just a redirect, don't worry);can you delete it to get rid of double redirects? It's not controversial or important or conspicuous or anything, just a redirect (and besides, it was under the wrong name); but don't confuse it with Englischer Garten, which is the main article. If there's some protocol that I don't know about, please tell me. Thanks a lot! - JMBell° 21:38, 5 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Englischer Garten and others

Hello Smoddy, how are you? The redirect matter was supposed to be vice versa - English Garden deleted and English Garden (Munich) remaining, but it's just the same anyway. I was wondering if I could move Englischer Garten to Englischer Garten (Munich) myself, or if that required special permission from so-and-so number of users or so-and-so number of sysops. If a sysop has to move it, may I request the page move from you? Thanks (please reply!). BTW, I'll be missing for a couple of days - got sick with the flu and I also have to cope with an extra load of projects/exams. I'll check in from time to time so just leave your messages where they are, okay? Cheers - JMBell° 22:57, 7 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] FAOC

Re your vote on styles. I understand and agree. But only casting one vote is effectively a vote against Alternative 1 because it means that less opposition is recorded against its nearest rival. Ireland uses an electoral system called Proportional Representation using a Single Transferable Vote. It works on the same principle as the one being used (only less complicated! I never thought I would find a system more complicated than PR.STV!) What you do is give your bottom preference to the people you want to defeat, and spread your vote in a way that boosts the rivals of the alternative you do not want. So if for example, you find Alternative 3 the one you least like, give it your bottom vote so that opposition to it is recorded. And spread the other votes to ensure the weakest get votes ahead of it. If for example in Ireland I want to ensure candidate 'x' of Fianna Fáil is elected, and ensure candidate 'y' of Sinn Féin is defeated, and there are 15 candidates, I give my number 1 to 'x', my number '15' to 'y' and spread my other votes to ensure that all other candidates beat 'y'.

Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil voters famously used to practice a 'first and only choice' vote by just voting for their own preferred candidate and then stopping. They eventually realised that they were wasting their vote because they weren't using it to block those they were most opposed to, or to build up the rivals to the candidate they were opposed to. To stop Alternative 3 winning, if that is what you want, give it your fifth choice and give your second, third and fourth choices to the weakest options.

Just be careful though not to copy everyone else doing it. If everyone gives the same other alternatives the same order of votes they may win. So if option 4 gets a lot of 2s, give it a 4. Doing a full vote right down the line will have the effect of strengthening Alternative 1 vis-a-vis 3 or whatever. Just voting for 1 and stopping actually weakens it against its rivals if everyone else votes down the line, because while their opposition to different alternatives is recorded, by stopping at 1 your's isn't. That is why though very popular Alternative 1 is being beaten. Remember the winner won't be decided by who has more votes for, but which faces the least opposition. [edit] Votes on Styles

Hey Smoddy: There's a discussion going on at the survey on styles/prefixes to see whether Jtdirl "corralled" our votes by providing us extra information on the wacky system that's being used. Our, meaning those who were contacted by Jtdirl and changed, votes are being discussed on whether they are legal, should be discounted, or the like. I don't know about you, but I don't particularily like have myself and my vote being talked about without my knowledge. I think I'll have to jump in on the discussion, and thought you'd like to as well. Hopefully, everything can be straightened out. Ugh, what a mess. [edit] Hello, need help

Hello Smoddy! Well, I'm back, though prematurely. I was wondering if you could help out in this dispute we've got.

We, User:Mel Etitis, User:Moumine, and I, are having a small problem with User:Mr Tan. You see, this Tan character has been diligently editing many articles over the past few weeks. Now this isn't a problem in itself, but Tan does not have adequate knowledge of English grammar. This, too, shouldn't have been a problem, but (here's the catch) although Mr. Tan accepts that his English is substandard, he does not let others fix it. That is the cause of this whole dispute.

Over the past few weeks, Mr. Tan has repeatedly disrupted the project; for example, he persistently kept changing the grammar of some articles to match his own standards, and in doing so lowered the overall quality of the article; he added unnecessary {{gcheck}} templates to articles which needed no copyediting (e.g. Zanskar); verbally attacked the three aforementioned users.

Aside from this, he would do large-scale edits on articles, repeatedly replacing perfectly good phrases with his fractured English, adding questionable facts and the like. It has come to the point where reasoning has no effect on this user. With no other option (Mel had already blocked him once), we opened an RfC, hoping to enlighten him.

However, it didn't stop there. Mr. Tan gladly seized the opportunity to accuse us of doing various things, including vandalism, personal attacks, poor grammar, bad faith, and the like.

More information under Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Mr_Tan.

We would greatly appreciate your opinion.

Anyway, yeah, we've got this problem - could you help us out? Thanks. JMBell° 18:18, 10 May 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your opinion. ;) How's life? JMBell° 14:46, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Marvel-comics-stub

Hi Smoddy - yes, I'm pretty sure it is "sanctioned", as it were. ISTR that because there's a specific comics WikiProject it made i easier for them to have Marvel-comics-stub and DC-comics-stub, with all other comics simply given comics-stub (there's also a comics-creator-stub for writers, illustrators, and publishers). Grutness...wha? 01:24, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] CSS template standardisation

Hi Smoddy, can you change the style name to one without underscores in - they are not valid in CSS, and therefore all the templates are now badly broken. Talrias (t | e | c) 22:14, 18 May 2005 (UTC)

All sorted! Talrias (t | e | c) 17:08, 19 May 2005 (UTC)

Related to this, see my recent changes to Template:Peerreview. The correct way to center a table using CSS is to say "left-margin: auto; right-margin: auto". "Text-align: center" doesn't affect the placement of the table, only the alignment of text inside cells. --MarkSweep 07:39, 19 May 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I've cleaned up a few templates (I'm using Talk:Sollog as a test case), and everything is working as expected for me in Mozilla/Gecko based browsers. --MarkSweep 17:17, 19 May 2005 (UTC)

Can you explain what "doesn't actually work, div box not large enough" means? I tested and it looks indistiguishable from the table'd version, but works better in text-only browsers. -- Netoholic @ 17:01, 2005 May 19 (UTC)

I can answer this - the div size scales around the text, but not the image - so the image overflows. What browser did you test in? Talrias (t | e | c) 17:08, 19 May 2005 (UTC)
The other problem with div is that the vertical alignment between the image and the text is different from the default alignment in tables. I've tried this with large boxes and the result was that the image topline was flush with the text topline, as opposed to vertically centered. --MarkSweep 17:17, 19 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] When an Admin attacks...

I'm not sure how to proceed because I have been personally attacked by an admin. I am making a good faith effort to improve an article and make it POV neutral and he reverts my edits and refuses to discuss it on the talk page. He thinks I am someone who has disagreed with him before although I have no idea how to prove to him I am not, but I do disagree with him. This hardly seems fair and seeing as he is an Admin I don't know how to proceed. I have been a member for three days now and already he is ruining it. It's not even a particularly major edit or article; he is pushing his POV about a historical action into the article. I hope you can help.

--Dsquared 23:10, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hey thanks a lot, I didn't understand what sockpuppet meant until I read the article. Why didn't he just check my IP to show I'm in california not wherever the other people were from. I hope he acts better, I was genuinely surprised to find out he was an admin because he was being pretty partisan.

--Dsquared 23:45, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I'm not entirely sure what the above is about, though it seems to me to be a confirmation of this user's bad faith (and a further indication that he's not a newcomer as he claims). I've reverted Dsquared's edits twice , and have discussed the matter at length on the Talk page ([3], [4]). He, on the other hand, has edited my comments on the User page, and has made changes to the article without waiting for agreement, despite knowing that disagreement existed. Moreover, though it seemed clear to me from his first appearance that he was not a new editor as a he claimed, I didn't immediately make that claim (though another editor did), but waited until it had become clearer. His claim that I'm being partisan because I disagree with him also fits that profile. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 08:07, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
That he's not a newcomer is only part of my points above. The main part concerns the fact that, first, I haven't reverted his edits without explanation, and that he has altered a comment of mine on the Talk page in order to reply to it with facetiousness. Moreover, I'm not being partisan. I'm a little surprised that you've ignored all that in your response to me, and concentrated on the least important issue. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 08:57, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the general agreement. Note, though, that I've never called this user a sockpuppet (others may have, though he seems to have introduced the term into the discussion), as he's clearly not. The editor whom I suspect that he reincarnates has stopped editing. I merely believe this account to be the new account of an old User; I conclude that on the basis of a good deal of experience of such cases. (His claim that, as he's editing from California, he can't be a reincarnation of Ollieplatt (talk · contribs) is odd, unless he knows more about Ollieplatt's earlier location than I do.) Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 09:17, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Well, we probably have to agree to disagree on this. I've posted an alert at the Admin's Noticeboard, so perhaps others will settle the question once and for all. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 09:33, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

It didn't originally start out as an experiment... I declared a Wikibreak and solemnly swore not to edit... And yes, I did "give away the game" quite deliberately, when I noticed people were still talking to that account; secrecy was never the intent. :-) Thanks for clearing that up... [edit] The quoted message

I assume that David gave you access to his account. As i've stated on my RfA, my talk page, his talk page, and in an e-mail to him, I didn't send him the quoted message. I don't know what you found when you gone to investigate, but the forum and David has issues with me following Wikipedia:Requests for comment/David 5000. They'd do anything to 'get their own back' - they've threatened to before, and I guess they've decided that this is the perfect oppurtunity.

I think i'm a good user, my conduct is good, and my contributions speak for themselves (after the first few). I'm disappointed that you changed your vote based on a user with a clear grudge against me, instead of sticking with your support vote. My potential as an administrator doesn't change because a user dislikes my reporting articles which resulted in his (two hour) block. Hedley 23:04, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • Ok, then. I would be interested to know why you doubt my abilities - your change of vote has caused a huge swing in the way the RfA is going, taking it from the border of consensus to the edge of rejection, so i'd like to know where your doubts lie. Hedley 23:13, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi - Can you re-edit your response - it has included part of the user's question into a babel table on the page. Thanks. -- Rick Block (talk) 23:12, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC)

Done, partly by me. I'm not really sure what happened. smoddy 23:14, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
The original user post had mismatched open curlies (closed by parens), so the close curlies from your added subst parsed as close curlies to the babel template (and, your subst didn't). Then you and the user were both editing at the same time to try to fix it. BTW - I'd think <nowiki>{{template}}</nowiki> would be a more transparent way to show template calls than using {{tl}}. -- Rick Block (talk) 23:32, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Quitting Wiki

Sorry to tell you but it's just not worth it.

Mel is now accusing me of editing his comments on talk pages and continuing to be a grade-A asshole.

I'm done.

[edit] Portal:Cricket

I did. I couldn't be bothered to go to WP:RM and replay the debate. Maybe once this ArbCom nonsense is out the way I should go to WP:RfA so I can do the cricket pages properly. If you're going to reconcile the two - please bear in mind that Portal:Cricket has changed since the cut and paste move. Kind regards, jguk 23:00, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Ah, well some people will leave their flats at 10am to go to see Surrey beat Warwickshire at Whitgift School. Kind regards, jguk 23:37, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Elvis Presley

Would you please include the following passage at the end of the "Relationships" section of the present article on Elvis Presley:

Apart from these relationships to women, Elvis spent most of his time with men from the so-called "Memphis Mafia", among them Sonny West, Red West, Billy Smith, Marty Lacker, and Lamar Fike. These guys were wearing the same black mohair suits and sunglasses and used to hang with Elvis all day and night. Similar to the real mafia, there was a code of silence within the group during The King's lifetime, and they protected Elvis' name and image.

Thank you.
