[edit] What do you mean?

You wrote me: "Perhaps we should also think that "St" is better than "St.", on account of this general convention: when the final letter is present, this contracted form does not need a full stop (or period, depending on which side of the Atlantic you originate)."

This is not the rule I learned in school. (At least in English. In French, I understand, they do have such a rule.) I learned always to put a period in. Perhaps this is the rule they use in the UK, and would account for all the "Mr" and "Dr" I see without the period. But in the USA, periods are always used in appreviations, except for acronyms/initialisms. -- BRG 21:20, Nov 9, 2004 (UTC)

OK, perhaps I am displaying my own position relative to the Atlantic here. I'll bow to Wikipedia convention here! Smoddy 21:46, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC) 21:46, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] The Humungous Image Tagging Project

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

[edit] Cricket Infoboxes

I totally agree that the infobox I made was wayy too big, I have no problems with cutting a lot of the info out, especially since the link to cricinfo is there anyway. Apparently a lot of work has been done since you left the message on my talk page, and someone made a new one at Infobox Cricketer, shown here if you haven't seen it yet. I reckon this is the best so far, it takes up much less room and would be easy to update. --AlbinoMonkey 22:03, 23 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Cricket copyright issues

Those cricket infoboxes look great! Yes, the image copyright issues are tricky here. If you want to include a copyrighted image, there are two ways to go about it. You could request that the copyright holder re-license the image under a free license (such as the GFDL), or you could try to make a fair use claim.

Getting the image re-licensed is difficult, but rewarding. Free images can be used on other language wikipedias and on the Commons. But just getting permission to use it on Wikipedia isn't enough; Jimbo Wales has said that all Wikipedia-specific "permission" images will eventually get deleted, since they're not re-usable by others. I have successfully talked some site-owners into releasing their photos under the GFDL, so that Wikipedia can use them, but these were all private sites and non-profit organizations. A money-making site like cricinfo.com won't do this. It's not really worth your time asking.

Your best bet is to make a fair use claim. (This only works in the U.S., which is conveniently where the Wikipedia servers are located, but fair-use images can't be uploaded to the Commons - only the English Wikipedia.) To make a fair use claim, I'd advise uploading the smaller version of the images (e.g. this instead of this). Then in the image description box, note that the image is being used for educational purposes only; that a larger version is available at the source site; and that a free-licensed image of the player is unavailable. Then tag the image as {{fairuse}}. That should be fine.

Have fun, and happy holidays! – Quadell (talk) (help) 14:37, Dec 24, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] World Series

Hello Smoddy,

I do plan on adding to those pages, but going on the release early and often principle I figured stubs were better than nothing. The idea of a page for each year seems to have been decided upon by others as there is a link box and even a special section of the "most wanted" page set aside for these. Comments welcome.

[edit] Ipe

I've made this a redirect to Tabebuia, the genus containing the South American trees known as Ipê. MPF 00:10, 28 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] CSD

Please note not having potential for being a full article is not a criterion for speedy deletion. There are only a few strictly defined criteria which speedy deleting an article, all others you think should be deleted should be put on Votes for Deletion. --fvw* 05:04, 2004 Dec 28 (UTC)

Sorry if I was a little hasty there - do you happen to know which page it was? I was haunting the new pages section yesterday, and I think I listed three separate ones. I did also list one on the votes for deletion page, however as well. Sorry if my judgement was wrong here. Thanks for your help. Smoddy | Talk 10:41, 28 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Nope, not off the top of my head, sorry. I could dig in my contributions if you really wanted to, but I've been RC patrolling the last 6 hours so it might be a tad hard to find. No harm done anyway, I'm just trying to prevent slippery slopes :-). Keep up the good work on RC patrol! --fvw* 10:47, 2004 Dec 28 (UTC)

[edit] VfD

Oops, sorry, I added your VfD to the main page instead of letting you do it, sorry for the confusion. (I'd misread and thought the vandal editor himself was listing his nonsense on VfD to make some sort of point and thought he'd just done it wrong.) --fvw* 18:07, 2004 Dec 28 (UTC)

[edit] Silver Koopa and Friends

As a respected fellow (and far more experienced) patroller, could you have a look at this for me? The first line is making me a little nervous - being relatively inexperienced at this game, I am hesitant to get into any situation that could end up with an argument. Thanks for your help. Smoddy | Talk 00:33, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Ha, I'd hardly call myself far more experienced, I'm pretty much still a newbie here too; I've merely managed to stretch my newbieism out over a longer period of time. Assuming you're referring to "poorly drawn", I think that's ok. Just like saying Rembrandt was quite handy with the brush. It's a value judgement, but seeing as everybody agrees on it there's no problem. I'd generally try to replace it with something more descriptive like "shakily drawn" or "disproportionately drawn", but I'd be ok with "poorly drawn" as long as this is something everybody who knows it agrees on (which, with this comic doesn't appear to be that many people). Which brings us to the next point, I doubt this has sufficient notability to justify an entry, personally I'd VfD it. What do you think?
There's also Wikipedia:RC patrol for these kinds of things by the way, but feel free to ask me instead; I love seeing that orange box when I log in… --fvw* 10:59, 2004 Dec 31 (UTC)

[edit] Australian Cricket

The team page is on my watchlist for reasons which escaped me to begin with, but the anon edits tend to keep it there I rather think. One of these days, I'll get around to improving it beyond the sort of quasi-list-and-bits-of-stuff stage, but it's not a prospect that fills me with great joy. BigHaz 00:58, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] League of Nations

Thanks for the kind note about my edits there, and well done in catching some of the typos I introduced (it was late...). Re not linking articles in titles (ie, not doing what I just did with League of Nations above) -- I couldn't tell you whether it's policy or not, but after seeing other people de-link titles in favour of body text, I decided it was good idea and started doing so myself: I hope you agree it's a lot easier on they eye?

Aha, went to check: Wikipedia:Manual of Style says "Avoid links within headings". Same goes for when you bold the title of the article in the first paragraph. Is that OK?

League of Nations is turning into a fine article, btw. Congrats on the work you've done there. Cheers, Sluj 15:12, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC).

Re: your question. Yes I think that table would be better in this case. The other spot is a one sentence intro to other sections: "There were also some specific failings the League had in ensuring its aims were upheld". That is nonstandard because it is likely to be missed by most readers. Also it is a consequence of a somewhat confused sectioning. The subsections after the note I just quoted fall under the section 'The League's weaknesses'. Are they weaknesses(traits) or failures? So cleaning up the sectioning so that it is coherent and consistent would eliminate the need for the above quoted intro sentence, and make the article better overall anyway. - Taxman 13:24, Jan 10, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Votes on WP:RFA

I see you voted on User:Fvw's request for adminship, but you didn't sign your vote. Could you go back and add the four tildes, otherwise I don't believe it is a valid vote. Thanks.-gadfium 23:18, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Help!

Hi, fvw, sorry to bother you again. What I am trying to do is list Skiadas for deletion, but the software keeps crashing. I am trying to say: Smoddy | Talk 22:52, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

And I have sorted it out. Sorry! Smoddy | Talk 22:52, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I am trying to say: Smoddy? I think something went slightly wrong there. But no worries, I think I managed to reconstruct the gist of it from my talk page history, I agree: It's a mix of (foreign) dictdef and genealogy, neither of which are appropriate. Thanks for your vote and kind words by the way. --fvw* 23:02, 2005 Jan 10 (UTC)

[edit] your signature

Heya, I just noticed your signature has <nowiki>'s around the pipe/bar sign (|). As far as I know, this isn't necessary, the pipe sign is only special inside [[]]'s. --fvw* 23:53, 2005 Jan 10 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks for telling me about, and reverting, the vandalism on my user page. I really hadn't noticed. All the best, <KF> 18:40, Jan 11, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Mazda Celtus

Well spotted, Smoddy: the Mazda Celtus article is phoney. I'll add it to VfD right now—thank you! Stombs 08:11, Jan 12, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism

Hi, Frank - just so you know, and you may, or you may not, and either way, you may want to brag about it, your user page has now been vandalised 18 times in 16 days! I wanted to congratulate you on your wonderful feat of being hated so much! As Neutrality says, you must have done something worthwhile. Long may it continue. Smoddy | ειπετε 23:09, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hehe, yeah. There was a slight lull in the middle there and I was getting worried my edits weren't getting through due to database trouble or something, but this evening has put me right back on track. Thanks for pointing it out, I might have not noticed my comeback otherwise. --fvw* 23:16, 2005 Jan 21 (UTC)

[edit] WP:RD

Just a quick note to say that I've replied to your question on the Reference Desk. Do you do much web design then? Smoddy | ειπετε 20:10, 23 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I guess you saw my other question about the show/hide thing. In answer to your question, not really. I had a look at the DTD and it doesn't help much. Using frameborder="0" in a frame element is supposed to work, but in practice it doesn't. I've checked with both IE and Firefox 1.0 - the only way to get the border between frames to disappear entirely is by using frameborder="0" in the frameset element - that removes it in Firefox, and border="0" removes it in IE. Now W3C can complain all they like, but that's the only way I can get it to work. Alphax (t) (c) (e) 13:14, Jan 25, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Welsh Newton

Hi Smoddy, I took a look at the Welsh Newton page that was my (rather poor) first creation. I have now edited the first paragraph and I feel that it is in line with the style recommendations, it provides a nice introduction and would allow a reader to get the gist of the article within, well, a line. I understand the possible problems with the extract from Kelly's Directory of Herefordshire and feel that perhaps it would be better if the important info was extracted from it and used to fill out the entry; although I don't think that it is currently copyrighted (partly due to its being all over the net.) I do believe that this article is reasonably important, considering that it has been decided to hyperlink all parishes within county entries, and shouldn't be simply deleted. (Even though it was partly a vanity article because it's my home village, that is the only way that all those hyperlinks will become active.) Could you take a look at it? Feel free to play around with it as much as you like. Get back to me with what you think. With some work I feel that this could be a good article.

Tibi gratias ago!

[edit] Edit count

Ungh, that's annoying. A new development too, I just pointed someone to the page a few days ago. I've already pestered the admins but received no response so far. Sending a question where it's gone to the wikitech-l list might be fruitful. --fvw* 00:05, 2005 Feb 4 (UTC)

Oh, aparantly it's being looked in to. No need to set my harassment scheme into working just yet. I'll keep you posted. --fvw* 00:14, 2005 Feb 4 (UTC)
And we're back! Yay. --fvw* 00:22, 2005 Feb 4 (UTC)

[edit] ==Re: Cricket Images==

Hi. Re the pictures you left [[Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cricket#Images|here]. If you want, email them to me, and I'll host them on my server. Cheers, Smoddy (t) (e) (c) 13:32, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

OK, I sent you an email through Wikipedia, which should show my address on it. I could not attach files to it, so you will just need to reply so I can get your address and send it through my normal email system. Thanks. AlbinoMonkey (Talk) 04:49, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Stub notice

You wrote: Cheers for changing Yardang. I'm always a little overwhelmed by the volume of stub notices... Is there a full, comprehensive and clear list somewhere?

There are a lot of them. There's a list with all the icons at Wikipedia:Template messages/Stubs, but that means waiting for all the stubs to load (and if, like me, you're on a dial-up modem, that can take some time). But I made myself a 'crib-sheet' of them all (as of a couple of days ago), which I've just added to my user pages... See User:Grutness/Stubs Grutness|hello? 00:17, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Maori

Ocean going canoes were probably masted and covered most of thevoyage under sail. See Goldie's painting, "The Arrival of the Maori in New Zealnd" : although not authentic it is probably a reasonable image of the canoe. Similar but smaller canoes can be seen today on many Pacific Islands. However your edit does not change the sense of the articleso I left it. Cheers ping 07:21, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Poor man's watchlist

You're right, I forgot all about the related changes trick. So I guess technically it is possible for me to have a watchlist, if I just manually list them. Thanks for that insight.

There are also benefits to not having a watchlist, though, the most salient of which is that there's no watchlist to eat up all your time. This should not be underestimated. :-)

I'm a hit-and-run editor, so watchlists don't work too well for me—I don't want to get bogged down in looking at an article because I happened to edit it a month ago, say. At present, I'm using my contribution list to keep track of my most recent edits (for the incidental discussion on talk pages et al.), and that works quite well. Thanks for the idea, though. 82.92.119.11 17:47, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

The "words to use" issue has now been completely resolved, thanks to our collaborative editing. I removed the link to it from "words to avoid". ;-) 82.92.119.11 18:03, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Vanavsos

Whether the name changes or not, I have noticed your comments on the deletion page. Can I get you to vote to "keep", no use arguing about the name if it is going to be deleted. Thanks.WHEELER 18:01, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Photos

Yes, they bring back memories, and could almost be photos I took back in the early eighties (film back then, of course); very nice (apart from the dead goat — I'm a vegetarian). Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 22:43, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] User:Vaoverland - administrator

Thank you for supporting my appointment as an administrator. I appreciate the pat on the back this represents. It felt nice to read the comments during the voting. Please let me know if you see something I should be doing as admin, as I intend to be fairly passive unless it is clear I should do otherwise. Thanks. Mark in Richmond. [edit] Legal fiction

The reason for putting Age of consent into Category:legal fictions is because the premise in law that an individual is unable to consent to something at one age, say 14, because they do not have the ability to understand or the "capacity" to consent and yet are able to consent at 15 is essentially arbitrary. The reality is that there is not too much different between most 14 year-olds and 15 year-olds. However, the law "pretends" that there is a difference and draws a distinction for everyone regardless of an individual's actual capacity. Thus, the age of consent is a Legal fiction. If you have any more questions or concerns, please let me know. Cheers! -- PullUpYourSocks 20:55, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)
