Skiatism By Samuel Ochieng
Skiatism founded in 1992, looks at a psychological approach that bases an understanding of counselling through the use of symbolism in a transcultural dimension, projected into an Intra cultural paradigm. It fuses stories and concepts of symbols, through fairy tales, myths and legends. As a word, ‘symbol’ takes its roots from the Greek word symbolon and it is usually taken to mean a sign from which a person can recognize or imply something. The word itself consists of the syllable ‘sym’ which gives the inference of together, common. The second syllable, ‘bolon’, depicts that which has been thrown: I throw. To join the two ideas together, you arrive at where things are thrown together. Looked at in a different light, the symbol is part of a whole and, if part of the symbol is ‘broken off’, then the part that is broken off is still a part of the whole, depicting both what the whole is and that it is the broken-off part of that particular whole. When reconnected to the whole, it gives a greater value to the whole because it enhances the whole towards a wholesomeness – a bonding of a part to a greater whole, giving a greater value. Through the understanding of the symbolism of stories in any one culture, then the basic understanding of that culture is met. Skiatism is a process through which there is the understanding and the beginings of assimilation of a culture through its stories and the symbolism that lies within.
