Booking.com, part of Priceline.com (Nasqaq:PCLN) is an online hotel reservations agency, offering hotel stays to the leisure and business markets worldwide. It is primarily a European operation, based in Amsterdam, with offices supporting in Barcelona, Berlin, Cambridge, Dubai, Dublin, London, Portugal, Paris, Rome and Vienna.
The booking.com website is offered in 15 languages, managing around 30,000 hotels in 8,000 different destinations worldwide. Formally known as Active Hotels, the decision was made in 2006 to change the name to Booking.com as Priceline looked to consolidate its two major European assets.
Booking.com is a fusion of two European companies, Active Hotels and Bookings BV, purchased by Priceline in 2004 and 2005 respectively. Priceline’s recent quarterly earnings, much higher than expected, were attributed to “strong business at Booking.com, its European arm¹”.
