Portola Middle School is part of the LAUSD Unified District. Portola has a non-magnet program with honors and a highly-gifted magnet. Portola also participates in Mathcounts and many other competitions.



[edit] Classes Placements

Several of Portola's classes have different levels so that students can be placed in their level. These classes include math, drama, instrumental music, and vocal music.




[edit] Advanced Math Classes

In Portola Middle School you can take a test to skip a math level. However, if you are the only one taking the math course, you'll self-study. The most advanced math course is Algebra 2 w/ Trigonometry.




[edit] Music Classes

There are 5 levels for instrumental music: beggining strings, beginning winds, band, orchestra, and lab (full orchestra). Placement in those music classes is done through auditioning. There are 2 levels for vocal music: choir and Portola Singers. Placement in the vocal classes are done through audtioning.

There are two levels for drama: drama 1 and drama 2. Auditioning is done for placement.

Other classes which include History, English, and Science cannot be skipped.
