The Latin and Ballroom Dance Association is a non-profit competitive and performative dance organization, which promotes dancing amongst youth and young adults in Southern California. The organization approaches dance as an artform, emphasizing the technical aspects of body movement as well as artistic expression through rhythm, styling, partnering and choreography.

Competitive partnership dancing is a relatively new form of sport that originated in Europe less than 100 years ago around the time of the first world war [1]

The Latin and Ballroom Dance Association, a.k.a. "latin ballroom" for short, began as a pilot organization in the first quarter of 2005 at the University of California, Irvine under the name Latin Dance Team. The team went on to look for professional coaches and began training a national formation team that competes annually at the National Collegiate Dancesport Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The team enjoyed much success winning many competitions in formation and couple events. By popular demand, the ballroom dances were added in 2006, prompting the name change to what it is currently known.

In 2007, the two founders of LBDA started a separate professional organization that would provide LBDA with guidance, help it develop a structured dance curriculum and be the public face to the greater community to attract support from commercial sponsors, private donors and grant programs. These efforts resulted in the birth of a 501(c)3 tax-exempt non-profit organization called Millennium Dance Association.

LBDA is an equal opportunity organization and does not discriminate against gender, race, color or religious affiliation. As such, anyone who expresses an interest in learning latin ballroom dances is considered a member of the team after properly signing up. Though dance training is geared towards the competitive dance circuit, members are not obligated to atttend competitions while on the team.
