[edit] Varieties of English

What idiosyncratic English language usage should be allowed in Wikipedia?
I suggest only very little. There are thousands of languages and hundreds of cultures, each of which may have a peculiar influence on a non-native English-speaker editor's writing. An example: many languages do not have an indefinite article (Somali "nin" is "man" by the dictionary but in use it is more often "a man"). Many Wikipedia articles on "local" matters omit indefinite, or even definite, articles. Rightly or wrongly examples such as this article's "is son of" jar sufficiently to spread ripples of doubt about the articles. I can't see a bot cleaning up such things, using a spell and grammar checker might help but, judging by how common misspelling is in WP, the enthusiasm to publish overrides the need to click on a spellchecker button.--SilasW 10:19, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
