[edit] Samba=>Saudi American Bank

I don't have an accurate date to when the name change took place. The bank has completely whitewashed this part of its history. I need a little help locating this info.Burning phoneix 11:51, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

According to the official Samba website:

" Citibank acquired the remaining 40% of the equity in exchange for the assets of its Riyadh and Jeddah branches. Citibank entered into a Technical Management Agreement under which it agreed to manage the new bank. This agreement provided that Citibank would second staff to the new bank and provide technical support and that it would not receive compensation for these services (other than as a shareholder) except for reimbursement of actual expenses."

Are Citibank and Citigroup just two names for the same thing? Burning phoneix 07:10, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

No. Citibank is a commercial bank and only part of the giant financial company, Citigroup (investment bank). - Eagleamn 07:12, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

I don't think the above assertion should be incorporated into the article. The name was changed when Citibank sold their remaining stake in Samba to al-Waleed bin Talal.

And the SABB mention is also incorrect, they're still called Saudi British Bank last time I checked.

Well the article asserts that they are merely speculations, but with high degree of credibility and spread in my opinion. With regard to SABB, local branches may take a while to reflect changes (same thing with SAMBA when it changed its name), so perhaps a glance at their new website (and logo) can update your information. (I'm away so I may be wrong as well.) - Eagletalk 12:03, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
I didn't know they've rebranded to the HSBC corporate image. It was only done last month. But it seems to me they've done it to highlight their association with HSBC. They've even adopted their motto. It's only a matter of time until they'll be renamed "HSBC Saudi Arabia". But going back to the main topic, I don't see it necessarily the case the companies were renamed because of anti-western sentiment. However I do concede that politics was probably part of the reason for Citibank to sell their Samba stake.
