Samuel Wong

Samuel Wong (Chinese: 黃大德) is a Hong Kong-born Canadian conductor and ophthalmologist.
Wong led the New York Philharmonic after the absence of Leonard Bernstein in December 1990 and temporarily replaced Zubin Mehta in Washington D.C. in January 1991. From 1996 to 2004 he was the music director for the Honolulu Symphony drawing an annual salary of US$100,000. From 1999-2002, he was principal conductor of the Mannes Orchestra in Manhattan, New York. In 2000 he was named the sixth music director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO), succeeding British conductor David Atherton. He left the HKPO post in 2004. In 2006, Wong returned to medicine.
