Samuel Matthews

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Captain Samuel Matthews[1] (died January 1659)[2] was a British Colonial Governor of Virginia. Matthews came to Virginia in 1622[2] and was chosen as governor by the House of Burgesses in 1656[1] and again in March 1658.[3] As a member of the House of Burgesses, Matthews was viewed as an "honest, energetic and faithful servant of the Colony" whose death was "universally lamented."[4] However, he has been criticized for his persecution of the Puritans.[1]
