Samuel Lawrence (congressman)

Samuel Lawrence, (brother of William T. Lawrence), was a United States Representative from New York. He was born in Newtown on May 23, 1773. He attended the common schools, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced practice in New York City. He served as clerk to the Attorney General of New York, was appointed judge of marine court (later city court), served as a member of the New York State Assembly, and was county clerk of New York County.

He then moved to Cayuta Lake, and was again a member of the State Assembly. Lawrence was elected as an Adams-Clay Democratic-Republican to the Eighteenth Congress (March 4, 1823-March 3, 1825). He died at Cayuta Lake on October 20, 1837. His interment occurred in the family cemetery there.
