Samuel Enderby

Samuel Enderby Jnr. (1756-1829) was the founder of the whaling company Samuel Enderby & Sons. Vessels of the Enderby company made numerous trips in northern and southern waters and one of his ships, the Ocean, discovered the Auckland Islands in 1806. Whaling vessels owned by Enderby were also part of the Third Fleet (1791) taking convicts to New South Wales, and later took supplies to the fledgling colony. Enderby's son, Charles Enderby, was responsible for the establishment of a short-lived British colony on Enderby Island.
