Samuel Allyne Otis

Samuel Allyne Otis (1740-1814) was a politician from Massachusetts who was the Secretary of the United States Senate for its first 17 years. He also served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and was a delegate to the Confederation Congress in 1787 and 1788.

He was born to James Otis and Mary Allyne on November 24, 1740 in Barnstable County. While his older brother and sister, James Otis and Mercy Otis Warren, were both more prominent in the American Revolution, Samuel collected supplies for the Continental Army in 1776 and 1777.

From 1789 to 1814, Otis was the first Secretary of the United States Senate. He was the father of Harrison Gray Otis.

Samuel Otis was mentioned in an episode of The Simpsons entitled Lisa the Iconoclast.
