The Samsung SCH-u540 is a middle-of-the-line, mildly above-average phone offered by Verizon Wireless for access to its CDMA network located throughout North America.

While the design is similar to that of other phones offered in the past for Verizon, the phone differs from many VGA-only capable phones in that it offers VCast[1] "on-the-go" music download service.

The phone comes packed with a commendable 1.3 megapixel camera with a camera interface designed by Samsung, not Verizon as commonly found on other phones of the same price range. The camera controls are entirely customizable, even down to the visible icons on the screen and the "ready" and "capture" sounds, making timed shots particularly easy.

The phone features a very slim, flat design commonly found on other Samsung Cell phones of the current era. The phones have become quite popular, possibly riding the wave previously occupied by the Motorola RAZR (earlier versions). The phone features bright lighting both in the display and in the keypad (with full configurable options for timeout) and even carries an onboard "hold" switch for the outside touch controls.

The User interface is the standard "Verizon Wireless" interface, though in an updated "2007" flavor. The phone is completely devoid of the red bars that once dominated all Verizon offerings, and the user is provided with three choices of display themes:

  • Rainbow - the standard Verizon interface, albeit with pleasing icons and black-accent color on the menu screens.
  • Amoeba - A blue interface that features a morphic "blob" used to move within the menu.
  • Vivid - A blue theme that features a red "OK" key and a spinwheel-esque menu browser.

The Amoeba and Vivid themes are Adobe Flash based.
