Samsung Electro-Mechanics (Korean: 삼성전기) was established in 1973 as a manufacturer of key electronic components, and the company has grown into one of the industry leaders, thanks to cutting-edge technology and product quality.[citation needed]
SEM pioneered the technological framework for Korean production of A/V components in the 1970s, and in the 1980s the company diversified into materials and computer parts In the early 1990s, the focus was on manufacturing chip components, multi-layer circuit boards, and mobile communication and optical components. In the late 1990s, operations expanded into the production of digital products with applied high-frequency, software, engineering, and design technologies.
These changes helped Samsung Electro-Mechanics to become the leading electronic parts maker. Sales for FY 2003 reached 2.6 trillion won (approximately US$2.9 billion).
The Six Sigma initiative is followed to achieve the highest quality possible in all operations, from initial stages of product development. The ultimate goal is to streamline operations by implementing a global supply chain management system and online procurement and sales.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics is a supplier of many battery chargers for Notebook computers. The most notable manufacture job that SE-M has done is the one for Apple, Inc. with chargers for the PowerBook, iBook, MacBook, and MacBook Pro computers.
