Samboy is one of the largest brand of potato chips released in Australia and is owned by the Snack Brands Australia. Samboy chips are crinkled potato chips.
The most popular flavours are Chicken, Original and Salt & Vinegar and BBQ.
[edit] History
In the 1960s Samboy chips were not crinkle cut and only came in barbecue flavour. Although today's Samboy Barbecue chips taste similar to the original version, they do not taste the same[citation needed].
In the 1980s, the "Original" (ready salted) flavour was called "Samboy Gold".
The brand is best remembered by its ingenious 1980s advertising campaign that stated 'Samboy: The Flavour really hits you". The ad featured a guy on a bicycle delivering chips. Fans would remember the hilarious and distinct tone as he hit the front break at the last moment, pulling an endo as he came to an abrupt stop. He'd then present the pink bag of chips, "Salt and Vinegar Samboy". As the unsuspecting customer stood there, the delivery boy would immediately cycle off in a strangely low gear, pulling a large mono. The confused customer would then be drenched in vinegar as a large quantity fell from the sky followed by approximately 50 kilos of salt. Of course, when he delivered the green packet, a huge chicken would fall on the customer. The best was orange: BBQ flavour where a large solid brick BBQ would flatten the customer completely.
An advertising campaign during the 1990s included the slogan "Hit me with a Samboy chip", with the television commercial featuring a variety of Australian celebrities furthering the slogan to "hit me slowly, hit me quick, hit me, hit me", imitating the song Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick by Ian Dury & The Blockheads[1].
In 2003-2004 they discontinued the 'Atomic Tomato' flavour due to poor sales. Mass hysteria followed as the " Atomic Tomato " had become a cult chip. Recent times have seen the availability of Samboy chips decrease.
