Samastipur is an administrative district in the state of Bihar in India. The district headquarters are located at Samastipur. The district occupies an area of 2904 km² and has a population of 27,16,929 (as of 2001 Census).

It is situated on the banks of the Budhi Gandak River. The Ganges also touches it in the south.

Thaneshwar Temple is a very famous tample of Lord Shiva, and is situated at the heart of the city. Other new temples are also popping up. The latest one is Shri Khatu Shyam Mandir at Gola Road Samastipur. There are numerous other temples as well. A very famous temple 'KHUDNESHWAR STHAN' is also there situated in the vill. MORWA(RAYTOL) which shows hindu muslim unity there .IT is said that this SHIVLING was found inside 10ft of earth it is not man made and founder was a muslim .here both community comes to worship the lord shiva....

There were several well known leaders from Samastipur district, who had occupied ministerial posts in the Government of India. The first among them was Shri Satya Narayan Sinha, freedom fighter and a prominent member of Indian National Congress, who was accommodated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in his first cabinet. Satyanarian Sinha, who was elected to the Indian Parliament four times (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Lok Sabha) also served as a governor. Baliram Bhagat became a cabinet minister in the Indian government later, and also served as speaker. Karpuri Thakur, a socialist leader of National stature became Chief Minister of Bihar twice, first in 1967 and then in 1977. He was resident of a village later named in his memory as Karpuri Gram. Syed Shah Nawaz Hussain also belongs to Nathudwar or Buzurg Dwar (khanpur), Samastipur.

Samastipur also holds Railway sub division of East Central Railway. There were several small industries which includes Sugar Factory, Paper Mill, Jute Mill and Railway Factory.

Samastipur is rich in agriculture, because of is fertile plain. Tobacco, maize, rice and wheat are the main crop. Leechi and mango fruits are grown in abundant. The major population is hard working.

The main fastival of the district is Chhat Puja which is celebrated after the festival of Diwali.

The district still lacks in good education facility. Education facilities in the district are at minimum, which includes some colleges like Samastipur College, BRB College, RNAR College.S M R C K colloege. There is no professional college in the district. But this district possess a very reputed Agricultural College in Pusa, well known as Rajendra Agricultural University Pusa
