This compound Indian title refers to a territorial vassal or governor (a person who provides military support and governing over a territory in the absence of a king or monarch in exchange for certain guarantees). This however should not be confused with the Viceroy of India, a technically informal title conventionally given to the head of the British raj administration in colonial British India.
