The Sama Tower (also known as Al Durrah Tower[3] or Al Durrah Tower II[2]) is a skyscraper under construction along Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.[1] The tower will have 51 floors.[1] Construction began in 2006 and is set to be complete in 2008.[3]

[edit] History

The building was originally proposed as a supertall building named Al Durrah Tower II. The design was a 330 m (1,083 ft) twisting tower with more than 75 stories for residential use, costing about USD$140 million.[2][4] This design was regarded as a major addition to the Dubai skyline, but at the same time, the height of the project was a concern to the Dubai’s Department of Civil Aviation.[2] In response to this issue, the project was scaled back to only 51 stories.[5]

[edit] Construction

Construction of the 51 story project began in 2006.[3] The concrete foundation raft for the building was poured about a year later in March 2007 by the Dubai Contracting Company and Ready Mix Beton. Some 10,500 m³ (371,000 ft³) of concrete was poured between March 22 and March 23, which set a new construction record for a continuously poured concrete raft.[6] The old pouring record was also held by Ready Mix Beton.[6] Currently, two cranes and the building structure rise above street level.[7]
