Sam Yoon is an at-large member of the Boston City Council. He is the first Asian American to hold elected office in Boston. Born in Seoul, he moved to America at ten months and became an American citizen at ten years old. He received degrees from Princeton University and Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government and was active in many non-profit and volunteer organizations before being elected in 2005. Yoon's election was hailed by both the local media[1] as an important sign of the emergence of "New Boston", in which the city's traditional insider politics are becoming less important than before.
A community organizer and activist for years, Yoon has been at the forefront of a host of issues. He focuses his efforts on making housing affordable, lessening youth violence through youth programs and summer employment, senior issues, and making sure Boston residents can afford their heating bills.
Yoon was re-elected in November 2007, after receiving endorsements from many prominent Massachusetts politicians including Governor Deval Patrick and four other City Councilors.
