[edit] Character history

When Sam first arrived in Hollyoaks he was going by the name of Liam Owen.

[edit] Arson conviction

It soon emerged his real name was Sam Owen but he was using a false name following a conviction of arson which had seen his former girlfriend Jules home burn down and her younger brother died as a result. Jules had blamed him and her father for telling her to abort the baby she'd conceived with Sam. The whole village changed in their attitude towards Sam following this revelation, Tony Hutchinson even questioned keeping Sam on at Il Gnosh where he worked as a waiter. It eventually emerged Sam was indeed innocent of the charge and the real arsonist was his girlfriend's father who had set fire to the house as part of an insurance scam. For a long time he felt let down by his father Rob for not believing in him and tried to lead a clean-cut lifestyle because he felt that he had something to prove.

[edit] Degree and university

It was partly because of this false conviction that Sam decided he wanted to study Law at Hollyoaks Community College despite the fact his criminal record would make it impossible for him to practice law. Sam proved himself to be a star student by passing his exams with flying colours and being offered a work experience placement with a top law firm. It was whilst at HCC he also attracted the attention of fellow student Zara Morgan. Sam even proved himself somewhat of a hero by saving Cameron Clark from a suicide attempt.

[edit] Family

Sam was a major help to Russ in getting over his cancer. He almost split the family up by threatening to walk out when his father returned. He eventually forgave his father after Rob saved his life during a rock climbing accident on Russ's Birthday and realised that his father still cared for him and felt guilty for not believing him.

[edit] Andy Holt

Sam was also a daredevil and was part of action adventure group at college where he meet his old friend Andy Holt. Sam decided to study Law at Hollyoaks Community College but this didn't last long. In the late night special Hollyoaks: Crossing The Line he started to take part in drug rapes, after being tempted by Andy, who revealed that he had raped Russ's girlfriend Dannii Carbone by using GHB (but told him he didn't know she was Russ's girlfriend until after). Andy convinced Sam that the drug was a short cut to sex from girls who were gagging for it. Although he was wracked with guilt, he still committed the rapes.

[edit] Sophie Burton

Sam was disgusted with Andy when he found out he raped and drugged the twins Sophie and Mel Burton. Andy chose Mel and gave Sophie to Sam as a present, although Sam liked Sophie he couldn't go through with it. This forced Sam to stop, despite pressure from Andy. Unaware that Sam had been there on the night of her sister's rape and her drugging Sam and Sophie began going out.

[edit] The cliff

Sam's refusal to rape Sophie resulted in Andy taking Sam to a cliff. Sam thought it was for another 'This way up' challenge. But Andy confronted Sam about not raping Sophie. Meanwhile Russ was told by Danni that she was raped by Andy and he went looking for Sam. Russ eventually found Sam and Andy and The brothers and Andy ended up fighting. The fight ended after Andy fell off the cliff and into the lake (presumably drowning).

[edit] Back from the dead

In a series of late night episodes, Andy returned to continue his assault on the Owens. When Nicole was abducted by Andy, Andy lured Russ and Sam to an abandoned warehouse. When they got there Andy got the jump on the brothers and attacked them with a metal pole. Andy then revealed to both Nicole and Russ that Sam was also involved in the rapes. They were both shocked and disgusted.

[edit] Sentencing and prison

After confessing to his parents, they gave him the chance to turn himself in. Sam told them he needed to say goodbye to Sophie and he confessed to her his involvement in the drug rapes. Sophie then tricked Sam into turning himself in to the police. Although Sam recanted his confession, he was convicted of raping unidentified girls and was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. He told his parents not to visit him. Four months later he began writing to Nicole and sending her visiting orders, begging for forgiveness from his sister. Nicole went to visit Sam and told him how much of a mess her life was because of him and refused to forgive him. This led to Sam attempting suicide in prison and hospitalised. During his time in hospital he managed to escape by holding Nicole hostage and went on the run.

[edit] The fire at The Dog

He later returned deranged and determined to get revenge on Sophie for tricking him into confessing all to the police. While forcing Nicole to tell him where Sophie was, he learned that she was now Russ's girlfriend and over Sam. This tipped Sam over the edge and he headed to The Dog in The Pond where he coated the pub in petrol before storming in to kill Sophie. After a collision with police officer Calvin Valentine he dropped his lighter and the crowded pub went up in flames. Sam (aged 20) died in the fire he started at the pub alongside Melanie Burton (aged 21), Joe Spencer (aged 22), Olivia Johnson (aged 19) and Mel's twin Sophie (Sophie died from smoke inhalation in Russ' arms).
