Samuel "Sam" McGuire is a fictional character from the Disney Channel TV Series Lizzie McGuire. Sam is played by Robert Carradine.

Sam McGuire is the somewhat nerdy father of Matt and Lizzie. He is often clueless about what his children are really up to, leaving it to their mother (Jo McGuire) to deal with issues of children and family, but he sometimes enjoys clever schemes of the children when he finds out about them (to the distress of Jo, who may find them to be a bad idea). He is portrayed with a good deal of clumsiness, something which his daughter Lizzie apparently inherited. Sam hates the fact that Lizzie is growing up and tries his best to stop her, e.g, in I Do, I Don't, Lizzie says "I'm gonna get married in the morning" which horrifies him, making him yell to Jo "HONEY, A LITTLE HELP!".

Sam is married to Jo McGuire. It is indicated several times that they have been married for fifteen years. They first met during freshman week at High School. He says that he was dumped by every girl until he met Jo.

Sam has a cousin "Ree-Ree", with whom he formed a band called "Midnight Sam and the Love Patrol" as a teenager, along with a buddy named Stucco.
Sam's best friends are known only as the "Two Big Guys", but he once referred to them as Jeremy and David, who own a pet chimp named Fredo. Sam plays softball with them and they also like to watch football games together. He is also a longtime friend of actor David Carradine, whom he says is "like a brother to me", an inside joke because David is actually the brother of Robert Carradine, the actor who portrays Sam. Sam often has to watch Fredo when the "Two Big Guys" go on some outrageous trip.

In "Gordo's Bar Mitzvah", he said he was 15 1/2 years old in 1976, which would put his birth date around 1961. He is stated to have been a nerdy child and teenager, being president of the Audiovisual Club, a Mathlete, and a hall monitor. He built a soap box racer which he still had in a shed outside the house as an adult, and his aptitude test revealed him to have "untapped mechanical ability". He is afraid of heights due to a "bad rope-climbing incident".

Sam is proud of his baseball card collection, including a Roberto Clemente rookie card, which he accumulated in his childhood and kept as an adult until his son Matt traded it away without his knowledge. He also collects other sports memorabilia, and had a signed Super Bowl football from Walter Payton until it got accidentally destroyed. He also likes to paint garden gnomes.
