Samuel "Sam" Jonah Dingle is a fictional character on the ITV soap opera Emmerdale. He is played by James Hooton.

[edit] About Sam

Sam is one of Zak and Nellie Dingle's children. He has learning difficulties and is mentally slow. He has frequently been in trouble with the law, usually for theft, and spent time in prison for a hit-and-run incident with Edna Birch. He often gets work as a dogsbody, first for Eric Pollard and then Sadie King. He is bullied for his slow nature and his own half-brother Cain is particularly nasty to him.

In 2005 he got involved in a relationship with Alice Wilson and left Emmerdale with her to start life on their own farm. They both returned to Emmerdale shortly after, when Sam discovered that Alice was pregnant. In April 2006, he married Alice after finding out that she had terminal cancer. Early 2006, Alice gave birth to their son Samson via Caesarean so that Alice would be able to start her cancer treatment. The baby boy was named Samson after Sam got the idea when Belle mistook "Sam's son" as his name.

On 31 July 2006, Sam helped his wife Alice Dingle to die after suffering from cancer. Sam had obtained some drugs from cousin Eli and with Alice pleading for him to end her life he delivered the lethal dose that would send her to sleep forever.

The police soon became increasingly suspicious as to the exact details of Alice's death and opened a murder investigation. When they finally came to arrest Sam at Wishing Well Cottage the Dingle's barricaded themselves in the house. After the police gained entry to the house and arrested Sam, Del announced to the police that she did it. Del was then arrested but soon after all the Dingles admitted to killing her to protect Sam.

Eventually the police picked holes in the stories of the Dingles but Cain said he would confess to save his half brother from jail.

In early 2008, Sam was arrested after he had to serve as a courier for Eli Dingle. Sam was afraid he'd lose Samson, and ran away with him, but soon turned himself in. A nearby couple whose home he'd appeared at helped him make a plea in exchange for helping them with their charity.

Sam worked at Dingle farm, helping tend Jo's goats, but in June 2008, Andy sent the goats away and, annoyed at Sam's friendship with Jo, fired him.
