Buckman began his Minnetonka football career his sophomore year, 2003, where he was the team's starting placekicker. Buckman was a first-team all-conference and all-state selection at Minnetonka High School during both his junior and senior seasons. Buckman was selected to the 2004 first-team Nike all-American team and was also selected as a Tom Lemming all-American. Buckman was 18-21 on field goals in his career with a long of 47 yards and sent 92% of his kickoffs for touchbacks. Buckman was ranked as one of the top kickers in the nation by multiple recruiting services after being selected as an official nominee for the 2006 U.S. Army All-American Bowl and a 2005 Street & Smith's Senior to Watch. He was unable to participate in the 2006 U.S. Army Bowl due to a tear in his right quadricep. Buckman was also a two-time all-conference defensemen in lacrosse at Minnetonka High School.[1]
