[edit] Deleting articles

Hi there,

Please have a look at WP:DELETE and WP:SD for instructions on how to ask for deletion of a page. Moving pages around, and creating an article called "DELETE!!!" does not help to the process (apart from being very ankward). Regards, -- Iván Sánchez(talk) 16:21, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi Ivansanchez!

It is amazing how humbling is to be with Wikipedia. I am maybe "very ankward" but sometimes it is a vertue to admit to error and realize that reaching for professional help is the most efficient activity. Please try to keep the article on Judith Brown while eliminating the DELETE from the discussion. I promise I will be very careful in the future. Thank you for your effort. Sincerely, (Salmon1 17:19, 29 August 2007 (UTC))

Don't worry - the "DELETE" article is tagged for deletion, while the Judith Brown one is not, so admins will do the proper deletions. If you need further help, have a look at WP:HELP, or place {{helpme}} in your talk page. Cheers, -- Iván Sánchez(talk) 17:33, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your help. Best regards (Salmon1 17:47, 29 August 2007 (UTC))

Hi John_Reaves! Thank you very much for taking care in the elimination of "Redirect Delete" that I am responsible for. I will certainly avoid this mistake in the future. The article on Judith Brown is correct yet I would like to "clean up" the article according to wikipedia's requirements. Would you be able to give me some hints? Thank you very much. Sincerely, (Salmon1 20:15, 29 August 2007 (UTC))

You're doing it wrong, Salmon1 - if you want to tell something to John Reaves, use his talk page  ;-)
-- Iván Sánchez(talk) 20:49, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi Ivan Sanchez! Thank you for your involvment. I find it difficult to get on someones personal page. I thought that it would be delivered to him since I addressed him in a wikipedia format. I am a bit discouraged. Sincerely Yours, (Salmon1 21:57, 29 August 2007 (UTC))

I'd suggest chaecking out our manual of style and our policies on sourcing and notablility. -- John Reaves 22:04, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks I will follow your advise. Yours, (Salmon1 22:07, 29 August 2007 (UTC))

[edit] August 2007

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent contribution removed content from Judith Brown. Please be careful when editing pages and do not remove content from Wikipedia without a good reason, which should be specified in the edit summary. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. If you would like to experiment again, please use the sandbox. Thank you. Tiptoety 23:44, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for informing me of your actions, i appreciate your kindness, you are more than welcome to remove those artists from the list, just in the future please remember to use the edit summary, that is why i reverted it in the first place, due to the fact that you removed content without explaining why in the edit summary. Thank you, and happy editing. Tiptoety 00:02, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
You can simply just put the shows back in, i started to do some cleanup of the page, i made the Exhibitions section into a list, look at how i did it and i think you should catch on. Tiptoety 00:28, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
Salmon1, continue the Exhibitions section in the same format that i did, and another thing that would make this article a hit would be to add references. Let me know if you need help with that. Happy editing. Tiptoety 00:35, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Another thing that would greatly improve your article is photographs of the artist as well as the art that she created. Tiptoety 01:16, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Hello. Please don't forget to provide an edit summary, which wasn't included with your recent edit to Judith Brown. Thank you. Tiptoety 01:24, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

I was un-aware that you were not able to put images on the page. Great work adding the reference(s) section! Tiptoety 01:27, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] How to Use Edit Summaries

Hi there. When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:
Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field. If you are adding a section, please do not just keep the previous section's header in the Edit summary field - please fill in your new section's name instead. Thank you. Tiptoety 01:33, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Hope this helps, if it does not feel free to let me know and i would be happy to explain it more in depth. Tiptoety 01:34, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi Tiptoety! I am tired. I have good intentions and I hope I will have the stamina to follow this through. I kind of understand why some artists made it so well in history. They had an army to do the promotions for them. I am just a true art lover and I would like to help to maintain an accurate history of American art. I hope I will be able to be helpful. Thank you for your understanding and I hope to continue soon. Sincerely Yours, (Salmon1 01:42, 30 August 2007 (UTC))

Yes! The article looks Great, keep up the good work. Tiptoety 17:05, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Then next little change you can make that will improve this article would be to Cite Sources in the text of the article itself. You can take a look at this: Wikipedia:Cite Sources. You can also look at an article i worte: Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue, and take a look at how i cited my sources in the text. Tiptoety 17:21, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Also take a look at Wikipedia:Footnotes, this shows you exactly how to cite references in text! Best of luck. Tiptoety 17:38, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

That looks great, good work! Creating references in text took me a long time to get the hang of, but you seem to have caught on right away. Let me know if you need anything! Happy editing, Tiptoety 18:35, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Oh, the article is no longer a stub the definition of a stub is is an article containing only a few sentences of text which is too short to provide encyclopedic coverage of a subject. Wikipedia: Stub. Tiptoety 19:21, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Feel free to show me anything you need to. I would be happy to take a look at the articles. Happy editing, Tiptoety 21:31, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

I will be gone on vacation for then next 5 days, so i will not be on wikipedia. If you need help with editing you can contact User:Katr67 I am sure she will be happy to help you. Best of luck! Tiptoety 04:58, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your recent edits

Hi, there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. On many keyboards, the tilde is entered by holding the Shift key, and pressing the key with the tilde pictured. You may also click on the signature button <script type="text/javascript"src="http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Henrik/js/automod.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"></script>Image:Wikisigbutton.png located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot 01:49, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi there, I just thought I would let you know that you don't need to put the 4 tildes in the edit summary. If you look at the history of a page, you will see that the username is automatically recorded. If you look at your contribs, you will see that in the summary, the 4 tildes don't automatically turn into your signature (nor do they need to.) The signature is only needed for posts like this one. I hope this helps. Katr67 17:09, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
P.S. I hope this doesn't confuse you, but you do need to fill out edit summaries, you just don't have to sign them with four tildes. You can see what I wrote in the my edit summary for my edits to Mary Callery as an example. Let me know if you need help finding the page history so you can see what I mean. Katr67 21:43, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mary Callery

I went ahead and did a bunch of copyediting on Mary Callery--if you have any questions, ask them on the article's talk page, and I have a few comments to add there as well. I learned something, thanks! Happy editing! Katr67 21:41, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Judith Brown

Hi, I'm glad you liked my work on the article above. As far as the external links to the images, that's probably a few too many links. There should really only be one link to the judithbrown.com website, but you might put a note in the description of the main link that there are images. Take a look at WP:EL so you can get familiar with the external links policy. Ideally we need to find some free images that can be placed right in the article. Probably someone would need to go to a museum or gallery and take pictures (if that's allowed of course) and release them as free-use under the image guidelines. The image guidelines are kind of complex but they are here. I hope that helps. Katr67 00:53, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Disambiguation (or "dab" for short)

Glad to help. The general rule of thumb is to use as little as necessary. You can read more about it here: WP:DAB. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me. Precious Roy 16:37, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

The dab page is not really necessary since there are only two articles, but that's ok. What I should have done the first time is add the "For" template (see below) to the top of both pages, as I've done now. To get "For the actor, see Taro Yamamoto" put in "the actor" (without the quotes) where it says "description", and "Taro Yamamoto" where it says "article name"
{{For|description|article name}}
Again, if you have any questions (about this, or anything else for that matter), feel free to ask. Cheers! Precious Roy 00:32, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Moving articles

I've moved Mark Freeman (artist) to Mark Freeman, and fixed the links. To read about what I did, see WP:MOVE. Precious Roy 15:19, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

You're welcome. And thank you for all of your contributions to Wikipedia, as well. Cheers! Precious Roy 15:33, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Default sort for Categories

Instead of putting "|person's name" inside each and every category on a page, you can put a default sort template above the categories and it will use that. For example:

{{DEFAULTSORT|Yamamoto, Taro}}
[[Category:1919 births]]
[[Category:1994 deaths]]
etc.

Simplifies things a little bit. Precious Roy 18:29, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Just sharing some of the helpful tips I've picked up during my time here. Precious Roy 23:54, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] James Brooks

Hi. I did some basic copyediting on the article. I'm not too familiar with Brooks' work, so I'm not sure I can expand it any further. The most glaringly necessary edits and odd statements have been dealt with. More will be needed to expand the article, including an image. A fair use rationale can be used for that purpose (as I'm assuming his work is still under copyright). Cheers. Freshacconci | Talk 20:24, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Reply

Hello. Please feel free to copy and use anything you find on my userpage and talkpage. I copied most of it myself (the rest was just hit-and-miss until I got it to look the way I wanted). I'm glad to see you're going to spend some time here. There is a dearth of good editors focusing on art at Wikipedia. As for editing other articles, it takes a while to build up confidence and learn the sometimes tricky procedures. I've been corrected many times by more experienced editors, who for the most part are patient with newbies (the rule of thumb is WP:BITE). All I can tell you at the moment is keep working with what you're comfortable and soon enough you'll be trying more complex edits, getting involved with some disputes and enduring random vandal attacks on your userpage. All part of the fun here. I see you've been meeting the other regulars of this rather small visual art community. The interesting thing is that most of us don't necessarily have the same interests in what we focus on, but there's a shared commitment to high standards and we all become protective of the visual art pages. I've found myself defending from vandals articles on artists I've never cared for, often to the neglect of the articles I'm trying to work on. (Not sure about the English usage of that last sentence). Anyway, we'll be running into each other a great deal, I'm sure. If you have any questions or need help, don't hesitate to give me a shout. Cheers! freshacconcispeaktome 18:42, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your query

You may find WP:DISPUTE useful. I regret my wiki time is very limited at the moment, so I'm not able to pursue matters further myself. Tyrenius 23:14, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Response to Wikipedia e-mail

Hi Tyrenius! I mentioned in my "User" page that I had changed my name twice because of harassment. I had no idea who the gentleman was at the time. I had just started to do some articles in Wikipedia. I was attacked by an editor in the most disrespectful and undermining fashion. From the level of the arguments that went on I concluded that I knew the person. I used my name at the time so he discovered my identity early on and he wanted to discourage me from gaining insight and participating in Wikipedia. I called him and he told me that he was the person that I thought he was and that if I did reveal his identity he would be blocked from Wikipedia. At the time I did not understand what he was talking about. He followed up 3 times with harassing massages on our home telephone. From that point on he initiated complaints about me to several admins. I got similar warnings like yours but the admins were able to look into the details of the matter and the event calmed down because of the admins responses.

1. One admin forced him to declare WPBiography|living=yes and it did not take them any time to realize who wrote the articles and under which IP. Following this road I also learned how an editor can create overly abundant links and references to autobiographical articles.

2. They told him that they did not see any illegitimate personal attack coming from my side. I am sure that all these events are listed somewhere for you to look at. If you do not have access to the arguments I have them printed out and I'm happy to send them to you. The admins told him if he had any specific grievances about me he should pursue the matter. Interestingly enough things very soon calmed down.

Lately I got back to look at the articles. I found that paragraphs were added not pertinent to the article in question but rather directing the reader to another article not in question. You will find it in your user talk. I requested the revertion of this editing. I have been highly trained for professionalism.

I do not take your letter as a threat but a warning. I looked into your warnings and I have been reassured by the following:

1. Self-promotion. It can be tempting to write about yourself or projects you have a strong personal involvement in. However, do remember that the standards for encyclopedic articles apply to such pages just like any other, including the requirement to maintain a neutral point of view, which is difficult when writing about yourself. Creating overly abundant links and references to autobiographical articles is unacceptable. See Wikipedia:Autobiography, Wikipedia:Notability and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest." 2. There is no bright-line rule about what constitutes a personal attack as opposed to constructive discussion, but some types of comments are never acceptable:

  • Threats of vandalism to userpages or talk pages.
  • Linking to external attacks or harassment for the purpose of attacking another editor.

Editing Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons

This page in a nutshell: Wikipedia articles can affect real people's lives. This gives us an ethical and legal responsibility. Biographical material must be written with the greatest care and attention to verifiability, neutrality and avoiding original research, particularly if it is contentious.

To point out the facts has nothing to do with personal attacks.

In response to your following statement: "I notice you have edited another editor's user page. This is not considered the proper thing to do usually, so it would be best to avoid the practice, unless for such things as reversion of obvious vandalism."

According to: bright-line rule : There is no bright-line rule about what constitutes a personal attack as opposed to constructive discussion, but some types of comments are never acceptable:

  • Threats of vandalism to userpages or talk pages.
  • Linking to external attacks or harassment for the purpose of attacking another editor.

As far as my editing another editor's user page:

It was crucial to add a title of an article to a list from which it was left out. The correction had to be important since the editor could have deleted it for a reason and he did not do so.

I asked editors to help me in two corrections. One was done and the second is waiting for action.

You wrote the following:

I must stress that I am not making any accusations against you, as I have not looked deeply into the case, but the editor, who is an established one, is concerned.

I believe that you are an admin because of your knowledge in the rules of Wikipedia and because of your ability for impartiality and correctness. Thank you for your attention. Sincerely Yours, Salmon1

[edit] Response to Wikipedia e-mail# 2

Hi Tyrenius! I received your second Email 11//4/2007 to which I am responding. Your first point in your e-mail: “Please note my email concerned one main topic, namely revealing personal identity. I just wanted to make that clear, as it is something regarded extremely seriously on wikipedia.” I am replying with a more specific response. I am reproducing fragments of discussions:

Copied from ‘’’Help’’’

Jambel!Talk 05:39, 9 October 2006(UTC)

“If she is accurate that you are writing about yourself on Wikipedia without identifying yourself, she has a perfect right to call you on it. You can’t really both write about yourself in an encyclopedia and expect anonymity.”

Jambel!Talk 05:56, 9 October 2006(UTC)

I haven’t been tracking this in detail. I warned her earlier today not to make personal attacks. Are you saying that she has continued to do so? What exactly is the personal attack in question? (And, I’m sorry, but if you are writing about yourself, you should be listed at Wikipedia:Wikipedians_with_articles. Again, once you write about yourself, the claim to anonymity is pretty much gone.)

Salmon1 November 5, 2007: Continuing my reply to you: I have been sustained by the reception to my contributions.

If I have a complaint about a specific editing by an editor I will express my concern. It is not personal. It is my duty and privilege as an editor myself to strive for clarity and proper documentation with accurate references when I am contributing to an article. Your second point in your e-mail 11/4/2007: “Also, please note it is not up to you to decide what an editor should have or not have on their user page. Please don't do an edit like that again to another editor's user page.”

My sole editing on a User page was on the following occasion:

On the User:Modernist there is a list of articles that he worked on.

I looked through the pages that modernist worked on and I checked Wikipedia:Wikipedians_with_articles where Wikipedia users who are the subject of a Wikipedia article were listed. I found Ronnie Landfield - modernist (talk · contribs): Artist, writer, historian, teacher. I added Ronnie Landfield to the list. According to Wikipedia rules: There is no bright-line rule about what constitutes a personal attack as opposed to constructive discussion, but some types of comments are never acceptable:

  • Threats of vandalism to userpages or talk pages.

I have yet to see any evidence of my wrong doing. Now I have deleted my E-mail address so if you would like to reply again it has to be on a talk page.

You are functioning as an admin because of your knowledge in the rules of Wikipedia and because of your ability for impartiality and correctness. Sincerely, (Salmon1 02:19, 6 November 2007 (UTC))

[edit] November 2007

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, adding content without citing a reliable source, as you did to Abstract expressionism, is not consistent with our policy of verifiability. This is especially important when dealing with biographies of living people. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. If you are already familiar with Wikipedia:Citing sources please take this opportunity to add your original reference to the article. Thank you. Anastrophe 04:47, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Reply to November 2007

Hi Anastrophe!

In the article Abstract Expressionism I contributed the following elements:

Art critics of the post-World War II era. This portion of the article is highly referenced by me. Except the contributions that were added later.

The list of artists that I created articles for are the following:

Mary Callery article; Albert Kotin article; Anne Ryan article; Taro Yamamoto (artist) article;

All the above articles are well referenced.

To the following articles I made only reference contributions:

James Brooks mainly documentation; Conrad Marca-Relli mainly documentation; Manoucher Yektai mainly documentation;

Please review my page Salmon1 I find it very important to provide reliable and verifiable references. I am more then one year affiliated with Wikipedia. Sincerely, (Salmon1 18:57, 7 November 2007 (UTC))

You Anastrophe write: "This is especially important when dealing with biographies of living people."

If you read my Salmon1 page or my talk page you would see that I write articles or edit articles only about artists who are no longer alive.

With regard to "adding content without citing a reliable source, as you did to Abstract expressionism, is not consistent with our policy of verifiability" please direct me to my omission.

[edit] Welcome and advice

I've seen some of your edits and your comments on Tyrenius and Freshacconci's pages and thought I would say hello. As Freshacconci says visual arts editing is a small world and it's great to have you on board. It looks to me as if you are unwittingly running into some problems (although obviously I don't know all the details of email exchanges). Wikipedia has its own ways of going about things which can take a while getting used to. Take the warning above - such warnings are posted with a template to deal with a range of matters. My advice would be not to take them personally. Just reply with a brief explanation - and try to see it from the other editor's point of view. I hope Freshacconci won't mind me answering your question about watching talkpages. The easiest way to do this is to click on the editor's name and then click the 'watch' tab at the top of the page. Take a look at Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User to find someone who can help you on a more regular basis. Tyrenius, Fresh and Modernist are good friends to keep, so always listen to what they have to say. In particular, Tyrenius's advice as an Admin should always be taken seriously. Happy editing!--Ethicoaestheticist 22:24, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Just looked at User talk:Anastrophe.'s talk page (note the final full-stop/period) and it seems that this editor isn't interested in receiving messages. Respect his point of view, and, as I said earlier, don't take it personally!--Ethicoaestheticist 23:33, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
to confirm, yes i was merely using WP:Twinkle to quickly/efficiently communicate the issues my publishing a template regarding reliable sources (and i highly recommend twinkle). the notice at the top of my talk page is intended to scare away those who choose to merely 'chat', which i have neither the time nor inclination to engage in. however, i am not averse to discussing genuine encyclopedia editing. but again - per that notice - most such discussion really is most fruitfully dealt with on the article talk page. sometimes with the rapid passage of edits, i miss a discussion, but usually i will get to it eventually.
