[edit] Fall Creek/Red Cloud Thunder Tree-Village Feb 1998 to Nov 2003
Tree Village most noteworthy under this category is the 6 year occupation of a small timber sale in the Willamette National Forest at Fall Creek Oregon US. 7 sits housing up to 5 occupants tied together with rope 'traverses' 200 feet high and up to 125 feet between 'platforms'. Originally designed to be totally self sufficient, composting toilets, solar/wind power communications, cargo lines between ground and other sits, individual rappel lines, hydroponic sprout farms. Only rule--no rules, no hierarchy, no outside controls. Two individuals initally occupied one tree but as the village expanded but as interest and participation grew an estimated 1000 activists occupied the trees at various times. Activists at the Fall Creek Tree Village were known as "Ewoks" and the tree-sit campaign attracted international media attention. An Art Bell radio broadcast even featured a live interview with "Frodo", a Fall Creek activist who offered a brilliant analysis on the plight of old-growth forests in the US. The forest occupied during the Fall Creek campaign remains uncut to this day nearly ten years later-a testiment to the dedication and tenacity of Red Cloud Thunder activists.
Winberry Tree Village in the Willamette National Forest was another long-term occupation undertaken by Cascadian tree-sitters. The village was comprised of two treehouses(160 feet high and 175 feet high) and one suspension structure hung between trees. The Winberry village was occupied for 5 yrs. One tree house was two story, situated in a huge Red Cedar tree. It featured a bottom story built from branches in the manner of a bird's nest as well as a running water system. Winberry Tree Village activists were known as "Wookies", as opposed the Fall Creek Village's "Ewoks".
Other offshoot tree-village occupations related to the Red Cloud Thunder tree-sitters were "Slap", "East Devil", "Straw Devil", "Snog", "Madre Loca", "Blue River Face" and "Eagle Creek". "Ramsey Gulch" in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California was also founded and intially occupied by Red Cloud Thunder activists. The Red Cloud Thunder group enjoyed a long string of succesful forest occupations designed to curtail the decimation of ancient forests at the hands of industry. The group was known for it's militancy and uncompromising nature.
