Salusan bull
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the fictional Dune universe created by Frank Herbert, a Salusan bull is a species of large, dangerous quadraped animal. Described as being a "mutated" creature, they supposedly originate from planet Salusa Secundus just after the atomic devastation of that entire planet's surface. Whether the bulls are descended from species of cattle that were transplanted from planet Earth to Salusa Secundus, or was originally an indigenous Salusan animal, is not explained. The bulls are extremely fierce and aggressive creatures, described as having multiple compound-eyes, multiple horns, and distinctive red fur. While seemingly not an animal that has been safely domesticated, they are manageable enough to be raised on farms as a source of meat, and for the sport of bullfighting.
Duke Paulus Atreides of Caladan, the father of Duke Leto Atreides, was an excellent matador and frequently engaged in the sport. This was eventually used in a murder plot against Paulus (carried out by his own wife, Lady Helena Richese-Atreides) that claimed his life; prior to the fight, the bull had been drugged to become more powerful and vicious. Duke Leto would keep its head as an heirloom that he would bring with him to Arrakis; it is later taken as a spoil of war by the Baron Harkonnen.
