Salsa Lizano

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Salsa Lizano is a deep brown Costa Rican condiment developed by the Lizano Company in 1920, which is now a product of Knorr. It contains onions, carrots, cauliflower, cucumber and chili. Slightly sweet and with a hint of spiciness, Salsa Lizano is used by some in the same way that North Americans would use salt.

The ingredients include water, sugar, salt, vegetables (onions, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers), spices, acetic acid, pepper, starch, hydrolyzed corn protein, mustard, turmeric, sodium benzoate, sodium bisulfite, and sulfur dioxide. Many Costa Rican dishes are prepared with Lizano Sauce. It is commonly used with gallo pinto and tamales.

In reference to a famous quote about Costa Rica's peace, Salsa Lizano used a very catchy phrase: Esté donde esté un tico, siempre habrá Salsa Lizano (wherever a Costarrican is there will be Salsa Lizano).
