Salford Crescent is one of two railway stations serving the city of Salford, in the county of Greater Manchester, England. The other station is Salford Central.
The station is 1¾ miles (3 km) west of Manchester Victoria and 2¼ miles (3.5 km) west of Manchester Piccadilly. It consists of a single island platform with a ticket office and waiting room.
The station is also signposted as "For University of Salford", as the station is located on the edge of both the Peel Park Campus and the Frederick Road Campus.
Salford Crescent is located on two main rail lines in the Manchester area. First, it forms the point of a split in the Manchester-Preston Line, with local services running on to Manchester Victoria and long-distance services going to Manchester Piccadilly. Secondly, it is part of the line between Manchester and Wigan Wallgate. Due to its location it is frequently used as an interchange between the two lines.
[edit] Services
Eastbound: frequent services operate to Manchester Piccadilly (some continuing to Manchester Airport and Buxton) and to Manchester Victoria.
Westbound: Northern Rail services operate to Bolton, Clitheroe, Wigan, Kirkby and Southport, whilst First TransPennine Express services operate to Barrow-in-Furness and Oxenholme. Both First TransPennine and Northern operate to Blackpool North.
[edit] Expansion
Network Rail recognise that Salford Crescent has been the "victim of its own success" and the tiny station cannot cope with the level of patronage:
The report suggests development/expansion of the station (with extra platforms) and even greater use of it as an interchange, and possibly use as a terminus for services from the East of Manchester.
