Salesianum School is an independent Catholic secondary school for boys, located in Wilmington, Delaware. It is run independently within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wilmington. Salesianum (Latin for "House of Sales", referring to St. Francis de Sales) was founded in 1903 and is operated by the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. The current enrollment is just above 1,100 students, from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The school has two sister schools, Padua Academy and Ursuline Academy, close by in the city.

The school's goal is to educate and develop the whole person based on the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales, whose philosophy can be summarized in "Live Jesus." The school's official motto is "Tenui Nec Dimittam," meaning "I have taken hold (of the faith) and will not let go." Each day and most classes begin with the reciting of Salesianum's version of the Catholic prayer, The Direction of Intention. The Salesianum version reads:

"My God, give me the grace to perform this action with you through love for you. In advance, I offer to you all the good that I may do and accept all the difficulties that I may meet therein."

The prayer is followed by the statement "St. Francis de Sales, pray for us." Salesianum's tuition for the 2007-2008 school year is $9,880.00.

Salesianum was named one of the Top 50 Catholic High Schools in America by the Catholic Honor Roll in 2007.

Salesianum School was the first racially integrated school in the state of Delaware, and recently was recognized for this with a historical marker.[1]

[edit] Campus

The current campus of Salesianum is located at 1801 North Broom Street, in the city of Wilmington, Delaware. The lush 22 acre campus is home to the school itself as well as a gymnasium and the Eugene A. DelleDonne Memorial Park, which serves to hold 6 tennis courts and 2 soccer fields. In addition, the park includes a football field and lacrosse field for all of the school's outdoor activities. In addition to the campus, the athletic program also makes use of Wilmington's Baynard Stadium located directly across from Salesianum.

[edit] Athletics

  • Salesianum is an independent for interscholastic sports.
  • Salesianum has won 107 state championship sports titles. The only state championship the school has not won is basketball even though they have reached the state final several times.[citation needed] In the fall of 2005, it became the first[citation needed] Delaware school to win the boys state championships in American football, Soccer, and Cross Country in one year, an achievement they repeated in the fall of 2006.[2]
  • Salesianum has twice won the Cross Country, Winter Track, and Spring Track State Championships during one school year[citation needed], something which no other Delaware school has achieved[citation needed].
  • In 1994, Salesianum's football team defeated Bethlehem Catholic from Bethlehem, PA in one of the greatest upsets in school history. Bethlehem Catholic's quarterback, Dan Kendra, was widely regarded as the #1 high school quarterback in the U.S. and went on to play the position at Florida State University before tearing his ACL and being moved to fullback.[citation needed]
  • Salesianum does not have an official nickname or mascot. The school's general nickname is "Sallies", while WDEL, The News Journal and other entities assume (incorrectly) that the sports moniker is the "Sals".
