Salem District is a district of Tamil Nadu state in southern India. The city of Salem is the district headquarters. Other major towns in the district are Mettur, Omalur and Attur. The district is well connected by rail and road networks.

Salem was the largest district in Tamil Nadu before it was bifurcated into two as Salem and Dharmapuri districts. Later Salem district was again divided with the formation of the Namakkal district.

It had a population of 3,016,346 as of 2001. It is 46.09% urbanised.[1]

The district has a literacy of 65.72%, one of the lowest in the state.

Yercaud is a fairly popular hill-station at a distance of 32 KM from Salem city. Because of its cool climate, it has become a favorite tourist destination for the people in the general vicinity. It has got a lake with boating facilities, rose gardens, botanical garden, and view points to see the base land and Salem city.

Mettur dam , built during English period is one of major tourist attraction in salem
