Saket (Delhi)

Saket is an affluent area located in the south of Delhi, the capital of India. The neighborhood is named after the city of Ayodhya, an ancient religiously significant city in Uttar Pradesh. The name Saket in Sanskrit means a place that is close to the heavens.

The PVR Complex has a variety of coffee shops, restaurants and fast-food joints. These include McDonalds, Ruby Tuesday, Barista Coffee, Subway (restaurant), Pizza Hut, Azzuro, and many others. The complex also has several trendy pubs/bars, like T'zers, Voda, and Buzz. The addition of some more upscale eateries has led it to become more of a hotspot for citizens of Delhi seeking finer fare.

Saket is home to the PVR Cinemas Anupam-4 Multiplex Theatre, which was the first multiplex in India. The place was originally called Anupam and was owned by the Ansals Group, a group that also ran the Gyan Bharti School and shared a common boundary with the Anupam complex. The Ansals Group eventually leased the cinema hall to the PVR Venture Group (Joint venture between Mr. Ajay Bijli and PVR of Australia).

Around the area is also a video game parlor (featuring bumper cars, a virtual reality game, and a bowling alley; it was closed recently), an Archies gallery, and several other novelty shops.

The medical facilities of Saket include Max Devki Devi Heart and Vascular Institute and the G.M. Modi Hospital. Also located nearby is the New York MAX hospital at Khirki extension.
[edit] Getting there and orientation
The easiest way to get to Saket is to take any of the following buses: 427, 500, 501, 512, 532, 680 at the Bahri Mudrika (Outer Ring Road). There are many auto and taxi stands here as well. The Metro is expected to run through Saket by 2010.
All this development, has however become a residents' nightmare. With increased traffic and no pavements for pedestrians, it is dangerous for people to walk on and cross roads. The local municipality seems not to care and the quality of life is fast deterioating!
Saket is close to Mehrauli where Qutub Minar, the largest brick minaret in the world, can be found), Malviya Nagar, Madan Giri, Khanpur, Gitanjali Enclave, and Sainik Farms.

As India's economy continues to grow and major Indian cities continue to expand, neighborhoods are quickly changing and upgrading throughout the country and Saket is no exception. It is on the verge of becoming the "Mall Hub" of South Delhi since four major malls have opened on the Press Enclave Marg at the Saket District Centre. The road is named after the most recognisable enclave in Saket,"Press Enclave" where many journalists from media organizations around the country and the world live. Another route to get to Saket will also open up by 2010 when the Metro will pass through on its way from Central Delhi towards Gurgaon.
