Sakata (酒田市; -shi) is a city located in Yamagata, Japan.

As of 2006, the city has an estimated population of 116,883 and the density of 193.92 persons per km². The total area is 602.74 km².

The city was founded on April 1, 1933. On November 1, 2005, the towns of Hirata, Matsuyama and Yawata from Akumi District merged into the city of Sakata.
