(SAJ) The Special Anti-terrorist Unit (Serbian: Специјална Антитерористичка Јединица (САЈ) / Specijalna Antiteroristička Jedinica (SAJ)) is Serbia's prime counter-terrorist unit.

The Special Anti-terrorist Unit was created on 18th December 1978 with Milos Bujenović as its first commander. The unit is under the control of the Ministry of Interior (MUP). Initially headquartered at the Belgrade airport, they were relocated to Batajnica while maintaining a training center at Paklenink, complete with a model town to practice Close Quarters Battle (CQB) and other skills.

Special Antiterorist Unit has two assault teams, A and B, and logistics team C. SAJ duties include combating terrorism, insurgency, organized crime, hostage situations and high risk warrant executions as well as VIP protection.

[edit] Equipment

Like most counter-terrorist units around the world, the SAJ have standard SWAT equipment, the SAJ is equipped with Heckler & Koch MP5 variants, Serbian-made 7.62 mm and 5.56 mm caliber rifles, SIG SG 552, M4 Carbine rifles, H&K G3 SSG sniper rifles, riot control agents, stun grenades, and various other Western weapons. Sophisticated communications are also at the SAJ's disposal.They often have specialized equipment including heavy body armor, entry tools and night vision optics.

For transportation, 3 US-built Jet Ranger and 6 Bell 212 twin helicopters, the Austrian Pinzgauer 6x6 all-terrain vehicle,Land Rover 100 are available, for urban operations the SAJ use white Audi and black BMW cars. It is almost certain that there is a variety of uniforms used for a variety of types of operations. It is also almost certain that uniforms that are used give a tactical advantage and camouflage, therefore black uniforms and the standard blue disruptive camouflage BDUs used by Serbian police special units. Body armor and assault vests with the word "Policija" are also worn.
