Saint Seiya (films)

Due to high popularity in Japan and the rest of the world, several Saint Seiya films were released. The most recent was Tenkai-Hen Jôso ~Overture~ (lit. Heaven Chapter), released in 2004.

Without having a direct relationship with the manga or anime story, four movies was released in theatres or TV between 1987 and 1989. One more movie was released on 2004 as a continuation of Hades saga manga.

  • Japanese Title: Saint Seiya Gekijôban

The first movie is set between the 12 temple arc and the revelation of Athena. It starts of with Seiya, Hyoga and Shun at the orphanage where they meet the second employee called Elli. She seems to take a liking to Hyoga and at night they sit outside watching the stars. A shooting star flies over the sky and as Elli makes a wish, instead it Eris the Goddess of Discord uses it to reincarnate. Now after kidnapping Athena and using the golden apple to suck her energy out to rule the world. The bronze saints sets out for Eris temple to rescue Athena and the possessed Elli.

  • Japanese Title: Saint Seiya, Kamigami no Atsuki Tatakai

This is the second movie produced with the Saint Seiya characters, although it is the first movie to use a non-canonical plot, in other words, whatever happens during this film is not considered part of the continuity of the series. The production revolves around Saori Kido (Athena) and her faithful knights -Seiya, Shiryu, Hyoga, Shun & Ikki- and her meeting with the Lord of Asgard (sic) and his own armored divine warriors in the cold regions of Asgard.

It is worth noting that due to this movie's popularity, Toei created the Asgard saga of the anime

[edit] Legend of Crimson Youth (1988)

  • Japanese Title: Saint Seiya, Shinku No Shônen Densetsu

The plot revolved around the revival of 5 of the fallen Gold Saints by Abel. Seiya and the Bronze Saints' services to Athena were of no longer needed, as Abel's three Sacred Saints and the Gold Saints took her under their protection. Athena killed by Abel as she tried to protect the Earth from being destroyed, and the Bronze Saints had to fight again while hoping that she was somehow still alive.

[edit] Warriors of the Final Holy Battle (1989)

  • Japanese Title: Saint Seiya, Saishû Seisen No Senshi Tachi

The plot involves the coming of Lucifer to the Sanctuary where his underlings dispose of the surviving Gold Saints systematically. Athena goes to Lucifer to ask for peace and a condition is made, as usual. The Bronze Saints come to the rescue, destroy Lucifer's fallen angels and rescue Athena.

  • Japanese Title: Saint Seiya, Tenkai-hen Josou Overture

After the success of Hades - Chapter Sanctuary, this movie served as a follow up from the end of the Hades saga. Seiya is wheelchair-bound after his confrontation with Hades and Saori takes care of him. Artemis, her sister, comes to Earth ask why she is not serving as a God and takes up her scepter in her place. Saori then goes to the Sanctuary and starts spilling her blood in the hope that it may bring peace on Earth.
