Saint Petersburg State Electrotechnical University (Санкт-Петербургский государственный электротехнический университет) founded in 1886, and is one of the oldest higher education institutes in Saint Petersburg.

University leads educational work in the fields of radio engineering, telecommunications, control processes, computer engineering and IT, electronics, biomedical engineering, management and linguistics.

In this institute worked A. S. Popov, inventor of the radio. There is a memorial museum of A. S. Popov in the institute. In this institute worked Z. I. Alferov, Nobel Laureat of Physics for his achievements in the field of heterostructures. One time he was a dean of the faculty electrotechnics (now faculty of electronics).

A legend exists that V. I. Lenin hided himself here from gendarmes seeking him. Now room there this happened got nickname Lenins's lecture-hall.

In the Soviet times the university bore an addition to the title: "in the name of V. I. Lenin". It was very honourable to possess this prefix and only the best establishments had it.

University has many buildings, each of very different architecture. It is because they were built in very different ages: from Imperial to Soviet. Some of them was attached from other purposes, and some were built specially for university. There is a tale referring to very unusual architecture of 5 building that arhitect of it short time after ending his project got to madhouse.

The university one of the 6 in the Saint Petersburg, there military department will continue its existence. So it used by many students to "wipe out" from compulsory military service.
