[edit] History
[edit] Population
There are an estimated 750,000 Black Caribbeans in the UK, the largest subgroup of this are Jamaicans which number over 400,000. The remaining 350,000 people originate from the various other Caribbean Islands, including Saint Lucia. In 2001 UK Census, 8,265 UK citizens were born in Saint Lucia, and considering the Black Carribean growth rate in the UK, the Saint Lucian born community is the UK in 2008 numbers around 11,000, also there is likely to be up to three times as many people of Saint Lucian heritage (bringing the Saint Lucian British population to around 33,000 - or equivilant to 20% of the population of the island of Saint Lucia itself).[2]
[edit] Saint Lucia - UK relations
Saint Lucia and the United Kingdom have a strong relationship, mainly based on their historical links. Saint Lucia was once part of the British Empire and still remains one of the 53 countries in the Commonwealth of Nations (Queen Elizabeth II is the Queen of the UK and Saint Lucia). The British High Commision in Saint Lucia can be found in the capital Castries, and the Saint Lucian High Commision in the UK can be found in London.
