[edit] History

St. James was created in the 1950s as a junior high school for Catholic students but became a full high school in the mid-1980s. When the original Bishop Macdonell Catholic High School closed down in the mid-1990s, St. James inherited many of Bishop Mac's students along with Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic High School leading to a quick rise in school population and the subsequent construction of a new wing. Today, with the completion of the new Bishop Macdonell Catholic High School, most of the students come from the eastern and some northern parts of Guelph as well as from Wellington County.

[edit] Dress Code

All students must wear a burgundy and grey tartan design for ties and kilts. Girls must wear black opaque tights with their kilts. Also black pants and grey pants are premitted, white dress shirts, and white and burgundy polo shirts are part of a dress code.

[edit] Controversy Over Dress Code

The board directing St James Catholic High School is satisfied with their traditional dress code for this facility, because they believe that uncontrolled outfits cause individuals to be neglected or unfairly empowered. According to the directors, having a lax uniform requirement hinders an individual's perspective of social stance, which in turn, causes unfavorable adolescent growth. Their evidence to support this claim has never been released to the public.

Many of the students at St James Catholic High School believe that controlling daily dress habits causes the exact deviation from desirable adolescent growth that the board was originally trying to avoid. While the need to repel the tight dress regulation is clearly supported by many students that often refuse to go along with the dress policy, the board has never considered a fair discussion on the issue; in essence insisting that the importance of their established dress regulations is higher on the priority list than the possibility of being wrong about what truly hinders favorable adolescent development. A deletion of this paragraph would be another testimony to their directive.

It has also been suggested that the clothing supplier for St James Catholic High School, McCarthy, employs the use of third world sweat shops. It should be noted, however, that this claim has never been verified publicly. In 2003, the Wellington Catholic District School Board had a team assembled to investigate this claim. In exchange for a tour of McCarthy's clothing assembly line, the team was forced to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Their results have never been reported.

In the 2007-2008 school year, St. James administrators were ordered to tighten the level of strictness on dress code. Now, for anyone who attends class not wearing proper dress code, they will be removed from the class and are not able to return until the next class.
