Saint-Mesmin is a commune in the canton of Excideuil of the Dordogne department in the Aquitaine région in France.

[edit] Geography

The commune is located in the north-west corner of the Dordogne department. The village is located 55 km north-west of Périgueux. Most of the area is woodland, the remainder of the area is made up of farmland, mainly producing beef, cereals and other crops.

From the creation of the departments in 1790 Saint-Mesmin was first included in the Corrèze department. Three years later in 1793 it joined the Dordogne department. During the Napoleonic Wars, the population plunged and did not return to the 1,000s level until the mid 1810s. The population remained stable until the beginning of World War I, the largest population that the census recorded was 1,159 in 1831. The population declined slowly as residents moved to larger towns and cities. Since the end of World War II, the population has gradually been declining with the exception of a slight recovery in the mid to late 1960s.

[edit] The gorges of the Auvézère

The gorge has a spring by the Plateau de Millevaches. It is situated in a valley 100 metres above and contains limestone rocks. It offers a countryside of cascades.

The Puy des Ages is one of the two Natural Sensible spaces in Dordogne. Le Puy is a horse by the communes of Saint-Cyr-les-Champagnes and St-Mesmin, it has a rocky ledge stretching 1.5 km in length and is 415 m above sea level. Le Puy offers a countryside that features plants along with mystle. The orientation table which was built in 1993 and the guide to the countryside with the Auvézère trail in support.
