[edit] Overview

This missile has a length of 8.5 meters, weighs seven tonnes and can carry a pay load of up to 500 kg.[2] Sagarika was developed at the DRDO’s missile complex in Hyderabad.[3] The development of this missile started in 1991. The first confirmation about the missile came in 1998 when, the then Defence minister George Fernandes announced during a press conference about the development of the missile Sagarika.[4] The development of the underwater missile launcher know as the Project 78 (P78) was completed in 2001. This was handed over to the Indian Navy for trials. The missile was successfully test fired thrice. The Indian Navy plans to induct the missile into service soon. The missile is likely to arm the nuclear submarine which is expected to be launched in 2008. Sagarika will form part of the triad in India's nuclear deterrence and will provide with retaliatory nuclear strike capability.[5]The missile is developed under the Project K-15.[6] The missile launcher is developed at Hazira, Mumbai.[7]

The scientists who developed the missile were felicitated by the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh.[8] The final test of the missile will be conducted from an immersed pontoon launcher before its integration into the Advanced Technology Vessel, the nuclear submarine India is reported to be building.[9][10]

India successfully tested the K-15 Sagarika SLBM on February 26, 2008. The test was conducted from a submerged pontoon off coast of Vishakhapatnam. Sagarika is expected to be mounted on India's nuclear-powered submarine under-development at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.[11][12]
