[edit] Synopsis

Andy returns to the office after several weeks in anger management training, determined to make a fresh start with his co-workers. His attempts to go by the name Drew are unsuccessful, and Dwight decides to shun Andy for three years.

Michael repeatedly disrupts Darryl's warehouse safety training session, and Lonny and Darryl mock the office workers' safety session in retaliation, claiming that office work does not entail physical danger.

The office staff begins betting on various things, from counting the jelly beans in Pam's candy dish to whether Creed notices that his apple has been replaced with a potato. Karen loses every bet and realizes that she is still an outsider.

Offended by Darryl's disdain for office safety training, Michael decides to demonstrate the risk of depression and suicide by jumping off the roof, landing on a hidden trampoline, which is replaced by a bouncy castle.

From the roof of the building, Michael talks dramatically about the dangers of depression. When the bouncy castle is discovered, Jim and Pam realize that Michael is "going to kill himself pretending to kill himself", and the employees collectively talk Michael down from the roof safely.

[edit] Deleted scenes

The Season Three DVD contains a number of deleted scenes. Notable cut scenes include:

  • Office workers insult the cookies Andy made.
  • Angela keys Andy's car.
  • Kelly and Ryan squabble during warehouse safety training.
  • Extension of Michael and Dwight discussing how they should respond.
  • Michael shows how safety training can be funny by talking like Borat.
  • Dwight helps Michael calculate his trajectory.
  • Karen loses a bet to Stanley over how often Bob Vance calls Phyllis.
  • The office staff try to talk Michael down from the roof.
  • Andy sees his keyed car.

[edit] Notes

  • References to previous episodes:
    • Darryl forbids office workers from operating the forklift. In "Boys and Girls", Michael destroys the warehouse with a forklift.
    • Michael tells Dwight to call James P. Albini, the attorney he hired in "Sexual Harassment".
  • Michael's "Nottttt!" on the trampoline is a continuation from a deleted scene in which he compares himself to Borat.
  • Michael wants to test the trampoline "Letterman style," a reference to a recurring sketch on The Late Show in which David Letterman has staff members throw obscure objects off the roof of the Ed Sullivan Theatre.
  • Darryl says, "We've never made it a full year [without an accident]." However, after Michael trashed the warehouse in "Boys and Girls", Madge reset the accident board to zero. It previously read, "This department has worked 936 days without a lost time accident." (The board refers to "lost time accidents", which could mean that when the warehouse crew is injured, they are still able to continue performing their duties normally.)
  • Throughout the scenes in which Michael is standing on the roof of the office, low, rocky hills characteristic of Southern California can easily be seen. These hills reflect the show's filming location rather than the geography of Scranton, Pennsylvania, where the office is supposedly located.
  • Andy says that he completed anger management training in five weeks. In a deleted scene from "The Negotiation," he said that he completed anger management training the same way he completed university—on time. However, in "The Return" he noted that he planned on completing anger management training in five weeks even though it was a ten week program.
  • In keeping with his preference to be called "Drew", Andy has covered part of his name on his desk with a Post-It Note so that it now reads "Drew Bernard". This can be seen in the deleted scene where he is adjusting his fountain on his desk.
  • On Creed's desk, a binder bearing the label "Academy of Tabacco Studies" can be seen. This a reference to the film Thank You For Smoking, directed by Jason Reitman. Harold Ramis, who directed this episode frequently works with Ivan Reitman, father of Jason. Jason Reitman would later direct the season four episode Local Ad. Thank You for Smoking also featured Melora Hardin (Jan) and David Koechner (Todd Packer).
  • The line "Dwight, you ignorant slut," that Michael makes on the roof is in reference to an old Saturday Night Live sketch featuring Dan Aykroyd.
  • Whilst Kelly is explaining Netflix to Ryan, she mentions Love Actually. This movie features Martin Freeman who potrayed Tim (the character which Jim is based on) in the original British version of The Office.
