[edit] Origin and recording

The song was a Binaural outtake. It was written by frontman Eddie Vedder.

"Sad" was originally titled "Letter to the Dead" and was included on the original tracklisting for Binaural.[1] The song was leaked in 2003, months before it was finally released on Lost Dogs. Compared with the leaked version, the Lost Dogs version has a slight lyric change in the opening line.

When discussing the song in an interview, bassist Jeff Ament stated:

"Letter to the Dead" is just a great pop song. Pretty much every record, Ed will write a great pop song. And a lot of times, those songs end up not fitting the record as much, because we haven't really written very many pop records.[2]

When Eddie Vedder talked about the song at their July 20, 2006 show in Portland, Oregon, he stated that while working on the song's music he thought it sounded like part of a Sleater-Kinney song. He proceeded to say "that's why it sounded good."[3]

[edit] Lyrical meaning

In the liner notes for Lost Dogs, Vedder states that it is the "other side" to Jeff Ament's song "Other Side".[4]

[edit] Live performances

Following the release of Lost Dogs the song was regularly performed as part of the band's concert repertoire. The song was premiered live at the band's October 1, 2004 concert in Reading, Pennsylvania.[5] A live performance of "Sad" can be found on the Live at the Gorge 05/06 box set.
