History of the SAC Elite Guard (December 1956-Present)

In December 1956 General Curtis LeMay, the Commander of Strategic Air Command, directed the 3902 Air Police Squadron to organize and form and elite unit of Air Policemen to act as security guards for the Strategic Air Command Headquarters. The unit was initially known as Detachment “A” of the 3902ns Air Police Squadron and was composed of hand picked Air Policemen from the squadron and other units from SAC installations. The unit was to be attired in a distinctive and unique uniform to introduce the new SAC Air Police image. I mission was three fold. Primarily, Detachment “A” would be responsible to provide stringent security for the SAC Headquarters and its resources. The second portion of their mission was to provide personal protection for the Commander and Vice Commander in chief of the Strategic Air Command and their assembled staff. Acting as a Official Strategic Air command Representative at military and civic functions requiring military unit participation would be the third portion of the unit’s overall mission.

General LeMay determined that an additional unit, to act as the official Drill Team for the Strategic Air Command was needed. In 1957 General LeMay and General Wade and the Commander for the 3902nd Air Police Squadron successfully led a drive to select and procure a uniform of distinction. The initial uniform was composed of the tan herringbone twill khaki trousers and shirts with jump boots, white scarves and white laces. The addition of the cross draw .38 and holster combined with the wearing of the blue beret with affixed helped the unit to assume and air on individuality. Through the years, changes in Air Force dress standards necessitated changing the colors and combination of this unique uniform.

While the drill team was disbanded in 1969 the guard’s primary mission continued with added responsibility for the monthly “Changing of the Guard” ceremony, funeral details, civic events and formal military functions. The SAC stood down in 1992, with STRATCOM replacing the Command., the Elite Guard continues its security operation to this day.

The Elite Guard has gained national recognition since its founding primarily because of the strict yet courteous way it secures the Free World’s most vital strategic resources and the highly professional manner in which members represent the command. Their combined efforts make up the most efficient and unique Security Police/Security Forces unit in the United States Air Force.
