Sacrilege (band)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sacrilege were a female-fronted thrash metal band from the Midlands region of England. Three members (Tony May, Damien Thompson, and Andy Baker) were also members of an influential UK d-beat band, the Varukers. They teamed up with Lynda Simpson, also known as "Tam", to form the new band, Sacrilege.
Their first release was Beyond the Realms of Madness released in 1985 on the Bristol-based label C.O.R. Records (Children of the Revolution). Their second release, Within the Prophecy, was released in 1987 on Under One Flag Records, a subsidiary of the Music for Nations label. This record was well accepted by metal fans and magazines. A third album, Turn Back Trilobite, followed in 1989, taking the band into a doom metal musical direction. The band's first two albums have been reissued by Blackened Records in the UK.
Despite having played relatively few gigs during their existence, Sacrilege are today recognised as an important band; both as an influence on later heavy metal and doom metal bands, and as an example of the blending of hardcore punk, radical politics, and heavy metal that occurred during the 1980s.
Andy Baker subsequently played in an early line-up of Cathedral, a British doom metal band.
