She was scouted as a model in 1996 while attending Itoshima High School in Fukuoka, Japan. She made her acting debut one year later in Beach Boys with Takashi Sorimachi. She got her first starring role in 2000, as a welder-turned-hotel chain heiress in Cinderella wa Nemuranai.
In 2002, she appeared alongside Misaki Ito in the live action version of Taiho Shichauzo. She was also with Yuki Amami and Mirai Shida in the dark grade school drama, Jyoou no Kyoushitsu. Other actors she has worked with are Yukie Nakama, Zaizen Naomi, Jinnai Takanori, Miho Kanno, and Takeuchi Yuko and SMAP leader Masahiro Nakai in the acclaimed 2001 drama Shiroi Kage.
She was recently part of the NHK Asadora, Chirototechin as Natsuko Fubuki, a freelance writer who also serves as protagonist Kiyomi Wada’s mentor. She is also the current endorser of Sekisuihem (with Hiroshi Abe) and energy drink Lipovitan Fine (with Shun Oguri). Her latest movie, Postman, was released in theaters on March 22.
Hara is presently part of the ensemble cast of the second season of Shichinin no Onna Bengoshi, reprising her role as the secretive but talented lawyer Taeko Ijima. The series was first aired in 2006. Season two made its debut on TV Asahi on April 10. The series is set for an 11-episode run.
