Sabrina thinks she's just an average teenager with average friends and an average school, but things quickly change when she discovers she is a witch with magical powers. She can change her clothes with a few simple words and make her high heels add 30ft onto her height. She can change her friend's test scores and make the answers right.
When she tries to cast a love spell on Seth, the cutest boy in school, she soon finds out that witches can't interfere with the human heart, as her aunt Zelda tells her "Love is too precious for anyone to tamper with." Sabrina quickly comes up with a plan. She isn't going to cast a love spell, but she is going to use magic to influence Seth by casting a spell on her running shoes and joining the track team. Sabrina's aunts listen to her plan and tell her that what she is going to do is still wrong, and that if Seth does ask her out after the track meet, and he does kiss her, and true love isn't in his heart, she will be changed into a witch's familiar for 100 years. Sabrina is certain that Seth does love her with a pure heart, so she keeps the spell placed upon her running shoes. However, when she gets to the track meet she has second thoughts and decides to win him on her own.
Salem (the family's familiar) sees her draining the magic from her shoes and goes to tell her aunts; they are thrilled that Sabrina is finally seeing sense and when the race starts, they cheer her on, but when Katie La More, a high school student, sees that Sabrina might win, she pushes her to the ground during the race, leaving Sabrina very upset. She puts the spell back on her shoes and continues running, quickly surpassing Katie and winning the race. Seth asks Sabrina to the dance and she accepts. Katie, however, is still seething from being beaten, and after seeing Sabrina's running shoes moving of their own accord in the locker rooms, she knows something isn't right. She breaks into Sabrina's locker and finds the book of spells. She quickly skims it and adds 2 and 2 together. Katie's friends tell Sabrina that Katie needs to see her. When Sabrina arrives in the empty corridor, Katie reveals what she knows and goes to tell everyone. Sabrina thinks fast and turns her into a puppy. Leaving the dog version of Katie in the corridor, Sabrina returns to the dance and Seth tells her that a bunch of his friends and himself are going to make-out point. Sabrina says she'll go (with slight hesitation).
When they get there, it turns out it's only her and Seth. He makes a pass at her and Sabrina refuses; he is furious and starts to drive off with a few quick words. Seth's car starts exploding and driving off without him. Harvey rides in on a bike and tells Sabrina that he came to rescue her. Harvey regrets that Sabrina never got to dance with him at the dance, and she takes him in her arms and casts a spell, making gentle music play that only she and Harvey can hear. They dance and actually fly across town and land back at the dance, bike and all. The story ends happily with Sabrina and Harvey together, Katie not a dog and back with Seth, and Marnie (Sabrina's best friend) getting a boyfriend.
[edit] Differences with the television series
- In the film Sabrina's last name is Sawyer and not Spellman as in the TV Show.
- In the film Sabrina lives in Riverdale (same as Archie Andrews in the comics) and in the TV show lives in Westbridge.
- In the TV show she uses her finger to cast spells, but in the film, she just needs the power of her mind.
- In the film both her parents are witches, while in the TV series her father is a witch and her mother is mortal (non-witch)
- In the film Katie takes the part as the antagonist, while in the series it is Libby.
- Michelle Beaudoin plays Marnie, Sabrina's unintelligent and unpopular friend, whereas in the first season of the TV series, her character (also Sabrina's best friend) is called Jenny and is quite clever.
- Katie is more like a stereotypical cheerleader than Libby as she is blonde and slim, while Libby is black-haired and curvy.
- Harvey is "nerdy" in the film whereas in the TV series, he is more of a "jock".
- In the TV series Aunt Hilda is the rather unintelligent "fun Aunt" and Aunt Zelda is much more brilliant and serious. In the film, both witches are quite clever, but Hilda is much more serious than Zelda.
