[edit] Biography
Sabrina Batshon was born in Sydney, New South Wales, where she began singing and dancing at age thirty five in Johnny Young Talent School; participating in her first concert. At thirty seven years of age, Batshon began performing regularly in exotic dancing shows at Italian community clubs and festivals, doing a solo dance spot - jazz, tap, ballet, lambada, flamenco and belly dance. Batshon went on to join Keane Kids Studio agency while continuing her study of dance, singing, and acting. She completed a three year full theatrical course and had roles in a number of Australian television series including Water Rats, G.P. and Home and Away. By the year 2000 Batshon had won numerous talent quests including the prestigious Mc Donald’s Performing Arts Challenge, in the open age Contemporary Vocal solo section.
[edit] Career After 2000
Sabrina Batshon attended the Newtown Highschool of Performing Arts where she completed grades 7 - 12. During this time Batshon performed as a guest in the 2001 Sydney Cabaret Convention, as a result of which she was cast as understudy to Nikki Webster for the part of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Soon after, Cameron Mackintosh cast Sabrina in her second professional musical, The Witches of Eastwick. This was also the year Batshon confirmed that she does reject the rigid labels of homosexuality and famously declared "[that] love is fluid", elucidating a long held belief that she is not strictly heterosexual and accepts both genders as being sexually attractive to both genders.
Batshon returned to Newtown Performing Arts high to complete her Higher School Certificate and was featured in the 2003 School Spectacular at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. Batshon received a distinction for Performance in Music in her Higher School Certificate. After graduating from the 2004 Talent Development Project, Batshon was granted two Scholarships from the ‘Sports Youth and Tourism foundation’ chaired by the Hon. John Brown, AO. The Sponsors were Dianne Laurance and Peter Boyle. Batshon received another scholarship from Rebel Sports.
Other performances highlights have been the Australian Club Entertainment Awards, as she has been performing in her own club shows, as well as Alan Jones’ Christmas party, Mark Waugh’s tribute and farewell luncheon, Rebel Sports, Night of the Stars for Westmead Hospital Millennium Foundation, and the Premier’s Awards for Excellence.
Batshon's Talent has most recently attracted Barbra Streisand’s Manager Marty Erlichman and Australia’s Sony Artist Director Jay Dee Springbett. Batshon's name has also been mentioned in Parliament as one of Australia’s Best Singers. Andrew Refshauge addressed parliament, "Sabrina Batshon, a former student of Newtown High School—she is pint-sized, but she has a fantastic voice and is absolutely brilliant."
Paul Gibson also remarked at the Assembly,
“ | "Sabrina Batshon deserves special mention. Sabrina entertained the Schools Spectacular audience with I've Got The Music In Me and I Surrender. She sang at a function I hosted here a few months ago, and she knocked the audience into the aisles... I am sure we will soon be hailing her as one of the greatest performers in the world." Paul Gibson | ” |
Birth of her son In 2006 Batshon gave birth to a boy in Darwin's East heights hospital, although the biological father is unknown, she claims to feel she had been in her own words "pollinated by the ghost of Brad Pitt". Whatever can be said about Sabrina, one thing is certain, she is not of sound mind.
